Humble Beginnings & A Book Giveaway

It was a dark and stormy day. The date was July 23, 2006; the time was 3:17 p.m. I finally relented and took my husband's advice to start a blog. I was procrastinating. Although I was enjoying the book I was reading at the time (Bombay Time by Thrity Umrigar), I was more in the mood for something else. And so, I turned to blogging.

On that day two years ago, I wrote:
I began keeping a reading journal about three years ago, jotting down my thoughts and feelings about the various books I read. I don't pretend to be any good at reviewing the books I read, mind you, which is probably why it's taken me so long to get up the courage to start a blog. Still, there is a part of me that wants to share my thoughts with others out there and this is one opportunity to do that.

Along with my book reviews, I hope to share some of my other musings with you, whether it be about books, sometimes movies or television, and on the rare occasion something outside of those topics completely. I hope you will enjoy visiting my blog!
Sarah Durant's The Birth of Venus was the first review posted on Musings of a Bookish Kitty. My friend Linda Sheehan was the first to post a comment on July 29, 2006, under my review of Empire of the Sun by J.G. Ballard. (Thank you, Linda!) I was not even a blip on the radar back then. My reviews mostly went unnoticed, with an occasional visitor stopping in now and then.

I have grown as a reader through blogging in more ways than I can imagine. I am reading books I might not have read otherwise and interacting with a community of readers and writers who have expanded not only my reading, but my thinking as well. My review writing still needs work, I admit, but it is an ever evolving process.

Reading has always been a passion of mine. I cannot imagine life without it. I am grateful that I have had this opportunity to share it with all of you.

This past week, I celebrated my 10th wedding anniversary by hosting a book giveaway. I could not let my 2 year blog anniversary go without a similar celebration, could I?

  1. I love the fact that this contest is being offered on so many blogs - it's great!

Here are my recommendations, along with links to my review in case you're interested:
Cane River - I loved this one!
Emergency Sex and Other Desperate Measures - catchy title, fascinating book
The Avengers: A Jewish War Story - this book taught me things about WWII that I never knew
and finally, The Endurance: Shackleton's Legendary Arctic Expedition - I listened to the audio book and was completely enthralled!

If you do read/listen to any of these, please drop by my blog and let me know. I'd love to hear what you thought of them!

  2. me again - sorry, I gave you the wrong link for Cane River - try this one instead!

  3. I'm going to sign up again for one of your give-aways, because my greedy little reading fingers cannot turn down the chance to win many books.
    1. Have you read Shadow Family by Miyabe, a Japanese mystery?
    2. too many to remember! I'm still planning to read Broken for You, that you loved last year.

  4. Heather J - Thank you for entering and for the book recommendations. I haven't read any of the ones you mentioned, and only have heard of one, Cane River. They all sound good! Thank you too for including the links to your review!

Elizabeth - I understand the feeling. LOL Thank you for the recommendation of Shadow Family. I haven't read that one, but it does sound like something I would like. I have another of Miyabe's books on my shelf--one I won in a contest Tanabata ran earlier this year that I am looking forward to reading. I have a coworker who really likes the author as well.

I do hope you enjoy Broken For You when you get to it. I have a long list of recommendations and am not sure when I will get to them all! Still, it's fun to compile lists like this. I'll never run out of reading ideas. :-)

  5. Happy Blogiversary, Wendy! I never would have guessed that you've been doing this for only two years. Then again, in blog years that's probably the equivalent of at least a decade :-). Thanks for deciding to start this blog - and to your husband for encouraging you; you have become one of my favorite people, and I always enjoy reading your reviews, even if I'm not so sure about the books themselves :-).

I've actually passed up this contest on a few other blogs, but I'm going for it this time.

    1) I recommend two books that I passed along to you earlier this year, The Ruins of California by Martha Sherrill and Eleanor Rushing by Patty Friedmann, and I have totally selfish reasons for doing so - I really want to read your reviews and know what you think of them!

    2) Your praise of it prompted me to finally pick up a copy of Broken for You by Stephanie Kallos, but I haven't read it yet. I'm also interested in checking out Clea Simon's mysteries, but haven't been able to find them in bookstores around here (and I keep forgetting when I go to Amazon).

Nice to see that you got the embedded-comment form to work!

  6. I'm SO glad you started blogging! When I sort of dropped out of the Yahoo! Groups (I miss Linda Sheehan!) I was glad to be able to keep up with many of my favorite participants (including yourself) through blogs. I love your reviews and think you do a wonderful job.

I'll be back to answer your questions for my official entry!

  7. OMG I just realized I've been blogging for over a year! My first post was on June 22, 2007. Goodness, how time flys by.

Great contest by the way but I'd rather not be put in right now since my TBR pile is in danger of crushing me!

  8. As someone who's just started review blogging, this was a very uplifting post. I'm already noticing a difference in my enjoyment of reading because of my blog, and it's great to hear about your growth as a reader because of your own blog.

Your review of Nefertiti put that book on the radar for me. I love all things Egyptian, but I had no clue it existed before reading your review. I can't wait to read it!

Amazing contest! Please enter me. :)

  9. Hey Wendy, I stopped by!
Nice job on the blog. One of these days, I really need to do it as well.

What a coincidence that we started blogging around the same time! I always enjoy reading your blog, so please keep those posts coming! :)

  12. I'm going to continue to recommend you read more Mo Hayder and start her Jack Caffrey series with "Birdman".

I'd like to read "Tokyo Year Zero" by David Peace based on your review.

    My email's on my profile

  13. Congratulations on nearly two years of blogging! That's impressive!

It's been a pleasure getting to know you. I've really enjoyed reading your blog and have definitely appreciated your presence at mine. My wish list has repeatedly been a "victim" of your reviews - off the top of my head I can think of two that I've added (though there's probably a good many more!) - After Hours at the Almost Home and Machete Season.

I'll recommend you three books that I think are awesome but a bit underloved - Black and White by Dani Shapiro (a daughter becomes the unwilling subject of her mother's art - it's a very human ethical dilemma sort of book), The True Story of Hansel and Gretel by Louise Murphy (the author turned Hansel and Gretel into a really well-done Holocaust novel), and The Other Side of You by Salley Vickers (this is the first book in a long time that I've wanted to re-read because I think it's very possible I could get more out of it the second time around).

Here's hoping for many more years of good reading and blogging for you! =D

  14. What a beautiful remembrance. Like you, my husband talked me into blogging and I'm so glad that he did. It's nice to be able to share a passion with others. I'm very thankful that I've found your blog.

One book I'd like for you to read and review is The Monsters of Templeton. I love that novel and would like to read other people's opinions about it. I think you'll like it. Here's hoping I get lucky. If not, I know that some other great people will.

    ReplyDelete
  15. You've given me so many wonderful ideas for things to read, and I hope that I have found one or two that you haven't read.
I recommend for you: No One You Know by Michelle Richmond, which I really enjoyed recently. Another one that I would suggest is Names My Sisters Call Me by Megan Crane.

The book that I am really looking forward to reading based on your comments alone is Broken for You by Stephanie Kallos. I'm actually saving this for a rainy day.

  16. What a nice essay about the roots of your blogging ... and where it has grown! Congratulations on two very productive years online!

I was thinking about books I've read in the past year, and checked your list to make sure you haven't read *Suite Francaise* by Irene Nemirovsky. The book consists of two novellas written in June 1940, about events of June 1940 ... semi-biographical as Nemirovsky and her family are removed from Paris during the war. Chilling, as the book was discovered after her death (she had been a successful novelist in Paris during her lifetime). It has its light moments, as Nemirovsky does such a great job describing the various characters and personalities involved. The appendices telling *her* story are incredible.

The book you've reviewed that is on my wish list is Thrity Umrigar's *Bombay Time*. I read *The Space Between Us* earlier this year and found it very powerful.

And, yes, I'll blog about your giveaway!

    ReplyDelete
  17. It's great to celebrate blogging! Even before I blogged I kept journals... but they definitely slowed down when I started typing because I'm much faster.

Okay I scoured your blog for any hinting of the titles I'm going to suggest -- so please forgive me if you've already read them... but Terry Goodkind's series: The Sword of Truth. The first novel is Wizard's First Rule and the last one that just came out October 2007 is Confessor. There are a total of 11 books in this epic fantasy. I love that each book is a stand-alone novel, but as a whole it speaks on a much greater level. Goodkind is an extremely expressive and deep author. LOVELOVE LOVE.

And a book that you reviewed that made me want to read it (and Stephanie at The Written Word http://thewrittenword.wordpress.com) is Nefertiti by Michelle Moran.

I will blog about your giveaway!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Congratulations on TWO YEARS! That's awesome. I hope you're around for many more.

I would recommend On Chesil Beach, by Ian McEwan. See my review here: http://thebluestockings.com/2008/06/on-chesil-beach/

As for a book I would like to read as a result of your review: Moonlight Downs, by Adrian Hyland.

My email address is: thebluestockingsociety (at) gmail (dot) com.

Thanks for having such a lovely giveaway!

  19. You don't give yourself enough credit--you are a great writer, and I have really been enjoying your blog!

If you haven't read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, I would highly recommend it!

After I read your review of Nefertiti, I not only added it to my TBR list, but to my TBR SOON list! I also think Killing Rommel sounds quite interesting!

  20. Florinda - Thank you for your kind words! You are one of my favorite people too. You'd know that if you knew just how often I say things like, "Florinda says . . " My husband feels like he knows you too! It is hard to believe it has been too years already. Sometimes it feels like forever and sometimes like I'm still brand new to blogging.

I am glad you decided to join in! Those are great recommendations and definitely books I want to read. :-) I hope you will like Broken For You. I always get a little nervous when someone reads a book based on my say so. At least other people like it too.

Thank you for the tip on the embedded-comment form. Once I figured out how to switch to Blogger-Draft, it was really easy to do.

Andi - I'm glad I started blogging too. I might not have stuck with it had it not been for great people like you. You've been so supportive. I truly appreciate it. Thanks so much for your kind words.

Jen - LOL Congratulations on hitting the year mark. I missed my first anniversary too. The other day my immediate TBR pile fell on me. I was trying to reorganize a few of the books and the next thing I knew, they were falling down on top of me. :-) So, I understand the fear of being crushed by your TBR pile.

Ruth - It's very addicting! I pay more attention to what I read now and as a result am noticing things I might have missed otherwise. Plus it is fun to discuss books I've read, reading other people's perspectives. I hope you will enjoy Nefertiti when you get to it.

Denise - Hi, Denise! I am glad you dropped. :-) You should give blogging a try!

Nymeth - Thank you! That is so sweet of you to say. You are one of my favorites too. :-)

Melody - Thanks! I noticed that we started around the same time! I am glad we found each other. :-)

Nicola - I really must read more Mo Hayder. Must, must, must! Thanks for the recommendation! I loaned my copy of Tokyo Year Zero to a coworker and she's reading it now. I can't wait to hear what she thinks of it when she's done.

Megan - Thank you! Machete Season is a must read, I think. Especially in today's political climate. I do hope you get the chance to give it a try.

Black and White and The Other Side of You do sound good. They are going straight to my wish list. I had the opportunity to read The True Story of Hansel and Gretel before I began blogging and found it to be a very moving story. I've recommended that one quite a bit to others myself. Great choices!

Jennifer - Thank you so much! Our husbands are smart men. I am really looking forward to reading The Monsters of Templeton. It's definitely one I want to read. Thank you for the recommendation!

Christine - See, you were able to come up with two books I haven't yet read. :-) I recently bought a copy of Michelle Richmond's other book, Year of Fog, and am looking forward to reading it. Her new one, No One You Know sounds really good too. I've added both Richmond's and Crane's books to my wish list. Thank you!

Dawn - Thanks! And thank you for the recommendation. I do want to read Suite Francaise. I've heard such great things about it and it's set in a time period that I am really drawn too. I hope you get a chance to read Bombay Time. I enjoy Thrity Umrigar's work very much. I want to get her most recent book one of these days.

Monica - I think so too! And book giveaways are a great way to celebrate. Terry Goodkind . . . I think my husband may actually have a copy of Wizard's First Rule. I haven't read it myself but will definitely have to remedy that. I need to get back into fantasy reading.

Jessica - Thank you! I read Atonement last year and really liked it and so I am sure I will enjoy On Chesil Beach too. Thank you for the recommendation! I do hope you get the chance to read Adrian Hyland's book. He did such a good job with his characters and in making the setting come to life.

Laura - You're too kind. Thank you! I was just reading your review of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. :-) I do need to read that one. Thanks for the recommendation!

  27. Happy Blogversary! :)

This is my first time here as it seems I've stumbled on today's blog hopping trend: book giveaways. LOL!

My recommended book: Twilight series by Stephanie Meyers

I also blogged about this giveaway here.

It's teen fic, but very addicting, thanks to my teen daughters :)

I just finished an oldie, The World According to Garp as my introduction to John Irving. I've heard good things about him and watched all the movie versions of his books but realized hadn't read any of the actual books.

  28. A great book you can concider reviewing would be the Mrs. Lieutenant book by Phyllis Zimbler Miller...I am reading it right now, but always love to read others thoughts on books like this.

I have After Hours at the Almost Home by Tara Yellenon my TBR list after reading your review.

Nat - Thank you so much! Your blog is on my must visit list too. :-)

Shana - Thanks for the anniversary wishes, the recommendation, and posting about the drawing on your blog. Judy Blume was a childhood favorite of mine. I read every one of her children's books I could get my hands on. I've read one of her adult books and keep meaning to read more by her.

Tara - You are welcome! I was eying Amulya Malladi's latest book recently and thinking how I want to read that one soon. So many books . . . :-)

SuziQ - Thank you! I enjoy reading your blog too and you've certainly help build both my TBR pile and my wish list grow. :-)

JMom - Thanks! There sure seems to be a lot of giveaways going on right now, doesn't there? Thank you for posting about my giveaway on your blog and for the recommendation. I am looking forward to reading Twilight, which I hope to do before the movie comes out. I have a coworker who is quite smitten with the books and has been on my case to hurry up and read the series. I still haven't read anything by John Irving. Must remedy that.

Barbara - Mrs. Lietenant does sound good! Thank you for the recommendation.

Lisa - Thank you! I completely understand what you're going through. My mountain is about ready to topple down onto my head. :-)

Alisia - Thank you! I'm not nearly as active as I once was in book groups. I still visit Book Crazy now and then, but not as regularly as I once did. The Blood Flowers is definitely one I want to read. I found a remainder copy so that I wouldn't let it slip by me.

    Clea - Thank you!

  38. Happy Bloggiversary Wendy! I love your reviews so you better not stop blogging ever :) -- wishing you many more years of book blogging.
Well what a fantastic way to celebrate. I don't think you've read this one yet but I'd love to hear your thoughts on "In the Woods" by Tana French. Great book. After reading your review of the Matt Beynon Rees book, A Death in Gaza, and now that I've read the first in the series I do plan to continue on with it.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Oh Wendy--I think you are a wonderful review writer!! Happy Bloggiversary. :)

I did a quick search for The Book Thief and didn't see it--really, you haven't read it? Do so! Also, I think you should give Snow Crash another go. ;)

I know there have been others, but in particular I read The Translator because of your review. You also posted in your comments some other books that you read about Africa that I jotted down to read.

my email is tstineman AT hotmail DOT com

    And I posted here: http://trishsbooks.blogspot.com/2008/07/two-memes-and-award-and-giveaways.html

Blogging has definitely expanded my reading in so many ways as well--I love it!! Glad it has been such a great experience for you as well.

  40. Okay, I wasn't going to enter, since I just won a book in your wedding anniversary giveaway, but I can't resist - it's 14 books!

So, my recommendation is to read Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. I guarantee you'll be hooked and want to read the rest of the series.

I have read many books as a result of your reviews, but the one that stands out most is Broken for You, which has become one of my all-time favorite reads.

    ReplyDelete
  41. P.S. Forgot to mention my suggested book -- actually I have two that we've done recently in my book group -- _Unaccustomed Earth_ by Jhumpa Lahiri; and _People of the Book_ by Geraldine Brooks.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I"m not sure if I can enter this one, as I just won your last one, but if I can I'd love to be in it! I posted about it on your blog this morning, regardless.

I recommend gods in Alabama by Joshilyn Jackson, and one I found here is Apples and Oranges. I have a fraught relationship with my brothers as well.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Infected by Scott Sigler and Cold Plague by Daniel Kalla would be worth your time. Kalla wrote a previous book, Pandemic, that takes place before Cold Plague. (I'm currently reading this.) I'd agree with those who also suggested People of the Book and The Book Thief.
I specifically read The Way the Crow Flies by Ann-Marie MacDonald based on your review.

I would love a copy of The Monster of Florence by Douglas Preston. It's on my wish list

    ReplyDelete
  44. Thanks for the great contest! I have blogged about it here. http://shhhimreading.blogspot.com/

I would recommend Tales of a Female Nomad. I am a travel memoir fan, and I really enjoyed this one.

I agree with your review of The Arthurian Omen. A light, fun book for when you just want to be entertained.

  45. Two years, congrats!!! My three permanent cats, two foster cats and I would like to recommend my favorite book of all time, Back Home, by Michelle Magorian. After spending her formative years (7-12) in the US, safe from all the bombs of WWII, Rusty's back home in England, where nothing is familiar- not her parents, not the little brother she's only just met, certainly not that harpy who's supposed to be her grandmother, and definitely not the boarding school she's been shipped off to. She's trying to fit in in a culture almost entirely foreign to her, and it's not working out so well.

This is probably my favorite book of all time, one I've re-read time and time again since I first discovered it in the library as a child.

    Come visit me sometime! http://openmindinsertbook.blogspot.com

And a book you reviewed that looks interesting to me: Nightwalker by Jocelynn Drake. I'll be remembering this one when I'm needing a vampire fix or something.

Hopefully I'll get something posted on my blog about your contest! I'll get back to you when that happens! :)

  55. I'd recommend for you A Rose for the Crown by Anne Easter Smith. You seem to have read and enjoyed some of the same historical fiction as I have and this is a really good one we don't seem to share. In the same vein, I became really interested to read Nefertiti by Michelle Moran after reading your review. I had seen it in hardcover, but only after I read the review and found it in paperback did I buy it, and it's getting closer to the top of the TBR pile. =)

Thanks for hosting this contest - I'll also be linking back to you shortly on my blog, where my email address is in my "about meghan" section!
