TGIF: Mail Call & Friday Fill Ins

Last Friday I was complaining about stolen mail. This week my mail thief must have been on spring break. It was as if the mail gods had heard me and decided to reward me for my recent suffering. This week's Mailbox Monday on Friday, I have several books to report.

The Edge of Winter by Luanne Rice (Many thanks to Joy from Thoughts of Joy who sent me this one!)
The Secret Keeper by Paul Harris
The Midwife: A Memoir of Birth, Joy, and Hard Times by Jennifer Worth
The Silver Swan by Benjamin Black

This week, Janet took the first sentence in 6 of my favorite books...you fill them in...with the right words or even better, ones of your own.

And...here we go!

I guessed a few of these without trying too hard, but for the sake of the meme thought it would be more fun to make up my own responses.

1. "In a hole in the ground there lived a family of ishkabiddles."

2. "I was unable to visit the bookstore last week but that ain't no matter."

3. "After dark the rain began to fall again, and I curled up under my afghan with my book."

4. "Rats are coming up from the hold of the Spanish galleon."

5. "There was a hand in the darkness, and it reached for my book."

6. "Accidents ambush the unsuspecting, and so she was surprised when she danced her way right into a tumble down the stairs."

7. And as for the weekend, today I'm not especially looking forward to my early morning dentist visit followed by a trip to the veterinarian to see if Parker's health has improved; tomorrow my plans include a spring walk and catching up with errands; and Sunday, I want to spend the day visiting with you, reading, and preparing for the week ahead!

  3. Now Wendy, how on earth do you read all those books? I guess there is a darned good reason that we all have stacks that go to the ceiling!

  4. Choices! You certainly have good choices to make with these additions to your stacks! Have a great weekend!

  7. I got many of the same ones as you did from S&S last week. They look pretty good too I thought:

    The Heroines by Eileen Favorite

A Beautiful Place to Die by Malla Nunn

The Black Girl Next Door by Jennifer Baszile

    Almost Home by Pam Jenoff

    Enjoy!

  8. Wow! Now who wouldn't love that kind of daily surprise?!? :) I would really like to read The Blue Notebook.

  9. "There was a hand in the darkness, and it held a knife." "The Graveyard Book". One of the better opening lines I've ever read.

  15. You did very well! I have The Silver Swan by Benjamin Black and I'm looking forward to reading it.

I can understand your trepidation for the dentist - I have an appointment in one week. Yech!

    Have a great weekend...

  18. Holy Books Batman...your mailbox was overflowing with sheer goodness!! I loved your FFI about the hand reaching for your book!!

    Have a great weekend Wendy!!

  19. Wow, I'm jealous of all your books in the mail! Although, I'm hoping to have a few waiting for me when I get home from vacation. *Fingers crossed.*

BTW, how did you get the paw print to show up by the post a comment link--did it come with the theme? Very cool!

  20. I have awarded you and all of your kitten cuteness a little award. Come on over and pick it up!

  21. Yay for new books! I'm glad your mail thief was apparently on holiday last week.
I wasn't feeling very creative yesterday so I skipped the Fill-ins. You have some fun answers.
I hope you have a good weekend, except for the dentist part. :P

  22. Ok this is not about your post - so sorry about that! I am writing because I saw your comment on another woman's page about how your hands were really dry and you couldn't find a lotion that worked. Hubby had the SAME problem and I tried everything and nothing worked. His hands were so chapped and dry that his knuckles started bleeding. Anyway this woman I knew had the same problem and recommended this stuff to me and brought me an extra bottle - It's Avon - Called Intensive Moisture therapy. She said it's really cheap - like 3 or 4 dollars and worked miracles. So I rubbed it on hubby's hands generously and rubbed it in for about a minute or two before he went to bed, and when he woke up you could totally see and feel the difference - it was AMAZING! He only needed to use it a few more days before he was good as new. So just thought I'd throw it out there as a suggestion! =)

  23. You've got to watch those ishkabiddles - they can be very tricky!!!

  24. Let's hope the mail thieves are gone for good! What a great bunch of books you've got there. I'm coveting the book by Malla Nunn.

Good health vibes for Parker and the dentist visit!

  25. Melody - I sure hope so! They sound like they'll be good.

I really don't like going to the dentist's office. I have to go back again next month. I am not happy about that. :-(

I hope you are enjoying your weekend!

Cat - I hope you and your husband enjoyed his birthday! Did you do anything special?

I'm looking forward to diving into my new books. I just need to get through these other ones that came first. :-)

Sandy - I'm wondering the same thing, Sandy! Simon and Shuster went crazy in sending review books. They never warn me--they just send them. It makes for a nice surprise at least.

Jenclair - Lots of choices. :-) I haven't decided if I will read all of the surprise books, but there are several in the stack that look really good. I hope you have a great weekend too.

Kathy - Thanks! It was a good week. When it rains, it pours.

Caspette - I wasn't happy about having to do both in the same day, let me tell you. I didn't want to have to take off work for either and so they both got scheduled on my Friday off. At least one of us came away with good news--better the cat though than me.

Diane - I thought so too. We can compare notes if we read the same ones!

Joy - Wouldn't it be nice? I'd really be drowning in books then. I'm looking forward to reading The Blue Notebook. I was eying that one the other day in fact, thinking I would like to read it. Now I will be able to. :-)

Anonymous Child - I really want to read The Graveyard Book. One of these days.

Serena - It sounds like a good one, doesn't it? Are you part of the blog tour as well?

Nikki - I hope you have a good one too!

Melissa - They sound good, don't they? I'm looking forward to reading them.

Debi - It was definitely a present surprise!

You bet I had a weapon! No one was going to take my book. ;-)

  26. Florinda - A little too good, I think. I came home one day last week and there was a note on my door telling me where the package was hidden--I expected on package and there were three envelopes full of books. And not just one book per envelope. It was a bit overwhelming.

I have to go back for a root canal next month. I had scheduled a vacation day to make the Easter weekend a bit longer and now I'll be stuck in the dentist's office instead of at home goofing off. Oh well. The best laid plans.

    Kristy - You too, Kristy!

Nymeth - I hope so too! Have a great weekend.

Myckyee - I hope your dental appointment goes better than mine did. May you be blessed with perfect teeth!

I'm excited about reading The Silver Swan. I look forward to reading what you think of it.

Susan - Parker is doing better, thank goodness. The vet didn't schedule him for a follow-up, which is a good sign as well. I wish I had been so lucky with my dentist appointment. On the plus side, I'm not in any pain (knock on wood) despite the problem I need fixing. I hope it stays that way!

Jen - Yes, they have! LOL A booklover can never have enough books. :-)

Staci - Just about! I was lucky the UPS delivery person knew to hid them and not leave them on my porch this week. Whew!

Melissa - I hope you do find some waiting for you when you get home. That would be a great way to end a vacation. :-)

The paw print came with a previous template I used and my husband used his internet magic to add it to the new one. It's neat, isn't it?

Nat - It seemed like I hit the mother load last week in books. It's a bit overwhelming.

The Fill-Ins were a bit tough this week.

I hope you enjoyed your weekend!

LoveCreations - Thank you for the tip! I have a friend whose mother sells Avon. I'll see about ordering some through her. My hands are in really bad shape right now.

Sally - Yes, they can. LOL

Iliana - I hope so, Iliana. Now that I've set up a private mailbox, it would work that way, wouldn't it? :-)

  27. Thankyou for visiting my blog. IMHO the 'Cat' detective lacked that certain pizazz or should that be purrzazz!!

  28. Zetor - You have a great blog! I think that's what my husband thinks too. :-)

  29. "After dark the rain began to fall again, and I curled up under my afghan with my book." Sounds really, really good to me. It's been raining cats and dogs here lately. Perfect day for lazing around with a great book!

You've got some really good titles there, Wendy. Enjoy them!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Alice - Doesn't it? It isn't raining now, but I may just have to curl up under the afghan and read anyway. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  31. I saw The Blue Notebook on the LibraryThing March Early Reviewers list. It sounds really good. Can't wait to hear what you think about it.

I like Friday Fill-In #2. Looking at my TBR stack, I could probably do without a trip to the bookstore for years. Emotionally I can't do without those trips though!

#3 -- Darkness and rain and curling up under an afghan with a book ... sounds like a perfect setting to me.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I don't think I ever read any of the books you listed, but I sure hope you have great fun and enjoyment in reading them. Also, I hope your weekend was fun :)

Thanks for visiting my blog :) I wish you a nice day!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Terri - I'm looking forward to giving it a try. It sure sounds good!

You're right about those trips to the bookstore--they may not be necessary in terms of needing more books, but there is something psychologically rewarding about them. :-)

Julia - I hope I do too, Julia! Many of them look really good. I hope you have a great weekend too!

    ReplyDelete
  34. These books all look really good--am super jealous!!

  35. Wow, you sure did get a mailbox full of great books. Awesome. Happy Reading.

  36. Sadako - I'm looking forward to reading them. :-)

Dar - Thanks, Dar. It was a nice surprise last week.

  37. Not sure if I just haven't been paying close enough attention, but I liked the quote edition of Friday Fill-in. Your answers were a lot of fun to read! Enjoy the new books.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Trish - Janet's picked some good ones, that's for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I received The Blue Notebook, too. Doesn't it sound good?
