The Weather: It rained! Okay, so it was just for a very short while. Just half an hour maybe. Only one day. But it was nice. Today was quite lovely--not too hot, but sunny with a gentle breeze. We decided to spend some time outdoors, my daughter riding her scooter around the street, and my husband and I making ourselves comfortable on a blanket under one of the trees in our yard. The next thing I knew, my daughter and her dad had wandered off to visit the neighbor boy, and I was lost in my book.
What I Am Reading: I am nearly finished with Genevieve Cogman's The Masked City, which I am enjoying even more than The Invisible Library if that is possible. I love stories about the fae and magic and dragons. And, of course, books. This is such a fun series.
What Am I Listening To: I decided to give J.D. Robb another try, this time in audio form. I recently listened to Naked in Death and am now listening to Glory in Death, both narrated by Susan Erickson. I enjoyed Naked in Death much better this time around.

What I Am Watching: I decided to try out some of the new prime time shows, with the help of my DVR. I adore Kristen Bell and so caught the first couple episodes of The Good Place. I'm still not sold on it, but to be fair, I am not a big sitcom fan anyway. It is quirky and cute, and I am not ready to give up on it yet. I really liked the first episode of The Designated Survivor, starring Kiefer Sutherland. And Blacklist, which I have watched since it first aired, got off to a thrilling start. I am looking forward to seeing Timeless, which I think comes out next month.
Blog Posts That Caught My Eye This Past Week:
- Now on my wish list thanks to Katherine of I Wish I Lived in a Library: The Bookshop on the Corner by Jenny Colgan.
- Lark of Lark Writes reminds me why I want to read Daphne du Maurier's My Cousin Rachel.
- Melissa from Melissa's Eclectic Bookshelf has been mulling over the idea of bullet journaling too. I am not a To Do List person, but I like the idea and maybe could tweak it to better meet my needs. Or is it just another thing I would be adding to my already endless plate of activities and responsibilities I'm involved in? Finding time to blog is hard enough these days . . . Check out Melissa's discussion and maybe add your two cents: TO BULLET JOURNAL OR NOT TO BULLET JOURNAL?.
What's Going On Off the Blog: There was no soccer game this weekend, but we did gather for the soccer team photo. It turned out to be a big event, with food and a giant slide, which Mouse had to go down several times, of course.
This afternoon Parker had his senior check-up. He's lost more weight, and so the veterinarian has upped his medication dosage. No sign of the cancer returning, at least!
Let's not talk about the Scholastic Book order form my daughter brought home from school, with all her book choices circled. "Now, Mouse," I said, "We won't be able to get you all of these books, but we'll buy some. Maybe three." Yeah. So . . . I am feeling kind of bad now thinking how she is going to carry all the books home I did order for her. In my defense, it wasn't as many as she'd circled. True, I should spread out the book buying because there will be plenty more pamphlets from Scholastic coming home. I blame it on the newness and excitement of my daughter bringing home her first book order form.
On the subject of Mouse, it was a week of challenges for her. First a behavior report from her teacher came home for talking when she isn't supposed to (I would be lying if I said I was surprised--Mouse is a social butterfly, and I'm still trying to figure out where it comes from as it is certainly not me and her dad) and then losing her school folder with her week's homework in it. The homework honeymoon has passed and now we are going full force. While some of the homework is fun, Mouse hates practicing writing her letters. I have been trying various ways to make it more fun for her--and this last evening seemed to go better. Whew. I think much of the problem is that she and I are both so tired by the time we are home and sitting down to do her homework. She is able to do some of it at the after school program, but much of it is stuff we work on together at home.
My days at work are full and busy. My days at home are as well. Mouse and I have our routine down pretty well, I think. The introvert in me who needs quiet time to re-energize is being stretched to the limit most days. I am back to my old habit of waking up to exercise in the mornings, and that does seem to help some.
Oh! I joined Litsy this weekend. It finally came to Android devices and I couldn't resist. I do not know how much I will use it. I am still trying to figure the app out. For those who use Litsy, I am under the name LiteraryFeline.

How many years have you been blogging? Anything special you want to tell everyone about your experiences? (submitted by Elizabeth)I have been blogging now for just over ten years. So much has happened to me in that time, both in blogging and in my personal life. I am not the same person I was when I began blogging, but I like to think my purpose has stayed the same. At least in terms of using my blog to document my reading journey, and sharing my thoughts about and love for books and what I read with others. I had not realized initially what a wonderful community of book bloggers there was out there, but that has become another big reason I continue to blog. It's a place I feel I belong, and I appreciate the friendships I have made as well as being able to hang out with other book lovers. If I have learned anything over the years, it is that there is no right way or wrong way to do this blogging thing. There are lists and plenty of places to go for advice--even lists of pet peeves--but ultimately what matters is to do what feels and works right for you.
Flat Stanley visiting my office
Now it's your turn to tell me what you've been up to and if you have time, I would like to know . . .
- If you blog, how long have you been blogging?
- What have you learned from your blogging experience or is there anything you wish you could share with other bloggers?
- What have you been reading and/or watching this week?
I hope you all have a great week! Happy Reading!
The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimba, the Caffeinated Book Reviewer, and gives us all a chance to recap our week, talk about what we are reading, share any new books that have come our way, and whatever else we want to talk about.

Ten years, wow, that's amazing. I've been blogging for 7 and that feels like a long time.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you're enjoying the JD Robb more this time around. I'm a fan. THey're not gonna set the literary world on fire but they're comfort reads for me and I love the characters.
Deborah - It's hard to believe it's been ten years. I am not sure where the time has gone.
DeleteI was really burnt out on romance when I first read Naked in Death and it colored my opinion of the book. I figured it deserved another chance. Especially given how many people love the series whose taste I trust. It could be too that audio suits me better when it comes to the series. Although audio books aren't generally my go to reading preference.
Sounds like a great day! And I'm glad to hear The Masked City is good, since I loved Invisible Library and am very keen to read the next one. Blacklist I just started (a friend recommended) and I'm a few episodes in, and Timeless looks like it has potential too.
ReplyDeleteAh I remember bringing those scholastic things home and wanting all the books lol. One of the best things about school! And I agree about blogging- it wouldn't be nearly as fun without the blogging community.
Greg - It was nice to just relax a little and read. I really enjoyed The Invisible Library and The Masked City. I hope you enjoy Blacklist! I hope Timeless turns out to be good (and stays on the air if it is).
DeleteI hope you enjoy your week, Greg!
Your time outside getting lost in a book sounds wonderful :-)
ReplyDeleteI remember those Scholastic book things! Except I don't remember getting them until I was in middle school. Or maybe that was just when I started getting more into books and actually paying attention to them lol.
That is tough not having enough down time to recharge. I think every introvert sympathizes with that. Don't get too run down though!
I'm going to have to check out Litsy if they have it for android now. I've heard of it but have no idea what it is lol.
Kristen - It was nice to take time out to do that. :-)
DeleteI used to love those Scholastic order forms! They've got fairly good prices too--it's just a matter of moderation, I suppose. LOL
I expected a little more from Litsy than what it turned out to be, but it's still in the early stages.
I hope you have a great week! Thanks for visiting, Kristen.
Litsy sounds interesting, but I'm barely active on Goodreads as it is :p Another book site would probably drain all my time haha.
ReplyDeleteWe have scholastic in Singapore too! I used to be so excited to get the form, but... rarely got anything because I got a lot of books for my birthday when I was younger :p
Eustacia - Same here. I do log the books I read into Goodreads, but I am not terribly active there otherwise.
DeleteThat's so cool that you have Scholastic in Singapore too. It's hard to believe it's been around so long given I was ordering books when I was a child too.
Thanks for visiting, Eustacia. Have a great week!
I tried The Good Place too, but the only thing I liked about it was Kristen Bell. I thought she was great, but the rest of it seemed silly. I might try it again though, just because of her.
ReplyDeleteJill - The Good Place is pretty silly. My husband has a theory that none of the people belong there, not just Kristen's character. I'm not sure of the staying power of the show or me watching it, but for now I'll give it a go.
DeleteI've been blogging for over 8 years, and the community is a lot to do with why, I still am. Staying in touch with people when I've had blogging slumps, meant it didn't just slip away when it might have done.
ReplyDeleteNot really seen much about the Invisible Library series before, but it looks intriguing!
Darren - Yes, it's the community that has kept me here as long as I have been too. There have been times I've thought of stopping, but still I am here . . . :-)
DeleteI am really enjoying the Invisible Library series. It's a lot of fun to read.
Thanks for stopping by, Darren!
I just joined Litsy this weekend, too! I didn't see you on there when I did my batch of adding folks, but just added you now. :)
ReplyDeleteKelly - Thanks for adding me! I spent a little time looking around Litsy yesterday. There's a lot less to it than I expected. Not that it's a bad thing. :-)
DeleteI was like Mouse - it's hard not to talk to your friends at school. It's also hard to resist those Scholastic order forms - a lot of the books are priced well!
ReplyDeleteKathy - We got a good laugh over the note at work. :-) Yes! So many good deals on through Scholastic. I don't know how much the classrooms get for each order, but hopefully it's worth their while.
DeleteOooh, Scholastic is a money pit, isn't it? But one with benefits!
ReplyDeleteJenclair - Yes, there are definite benefits to throwing our money down the Scholastic money pit. :-)
DeleteI thought about checking out Kristen Bell's new show too but no one seems to be very excited about it. I will wait a little bit to see if people change their minds about it and then maybe give it a try. I'm hooked on The Blacklist and American Horror Story right now. lol I might check out the 2nd season of Scream Queens too.
ReplyDeleteJulie - I admit that except for Kristen Bell, the show didn't really appeal to me either. We'll see. Maybe it will get better. I saw part of one season of American Horror Story, but wasn't able to continue with it. Hopefully someday I will give it another a try. Blacklist is good, isn't it? I really like James Spader.
DeleteThanks for visiting, Julie!
I sent home scholastic book order forms - but I haven't seen many orders come through from my class :( I hope we get more, that's money I can use to buy books for the classroom! So feel good that you're helping the teacher have more books for everyone :)
ReplyDeleteI had to laugh that Mouse had a behavior report for talking - this week and last several of my kids who had never gotten into trouble had notes for talking. They're starting to make friends (which is good) but that means they want to talk. So don't worry, Mouse is just on track ;) oh and we've had several missing folders already too!
Wow - I had no idea you've been blogging for 10 years! Congrats, that's awesome! Have a great week :)
Berls - Maybe they are waiting until the last minute. One can hope. I put my order in online. I'm not sure how quickly the teacher is notified of the order, but she must be, right? They don't charge me until she puts in the entire class order. Or so the website said.
DeleteI don't imagine it's easy, having so many kids in the class to manage. I almost posted her note on Facebook, but decided not to. I can't help but laugh about it--although we did tell her she needs to be sure and listen to her teacher.
I hope you have a great week too, Berls! Thanks for visiting!
The soccer field in the photo of Mouse looks familiar. Like the area where my second son used to live in LA (Canyon Country). But lots of Southern California looks like that, I guess. I love seeing the hills so close by.
ReplyDeleteOf course, they are a regular feature in our skyline here, too (Central California), especially a few miles out.
That note Mouse got from her teacher is a familiar one. One or more of my kids have had that mention from their teachers (when they were young). I think it's cute, but I guess the teachers are not so enamored by it. lol.
I read the first three books in the J.D. Robb series...and enjoyed them, but there are so many books, so little time...so that's where I'm stuck in that series.
I've been blogging for more than 8 years...but the first year was not very memorable. Then I discovered the book blogging community.
Enjoy your week, and thanks for visiting my blog.
Laurel-Rain - Southern California all looks the same, doesn't it? :-)
DeleteI had to laugh about the note too, although you are probably right about the teacher not laughing. At least not in the moment. It's a pretty big class with no aide, so I imagine it's hard to keep so many children quiet.
I have the first three J.D. Robb books in audio, so that's probably where I'll stop too. :-) It is a long series!
Same here in terms of the first year not being the most memorable. At least the first half. When I started getting involved in reading challenges, it really took off.
Thanks for visiting, Laurel-Rain!
It's raining here today...much much needed. Really I'm just happy to not have a high of 95 today.
ReplyDeleteoh how I remember saving up all of my money for those Scholastic forms when I was younger! I was the annoying kid (I'm sure) who would send in an envelope full of coins. Ha! We haven't ordered anything yet because we already have so many books here at the house. We'll see. I bet Mouse will be so excited to get her package!
It is busy, isn't it! I'm also trying to figure out when to get in some "me time" without falling asleep first. ;)
Trish - I am glad you are finally getting some rain. Send some my way again, please!
DeleteHaha! I'm sure you weren't the only one sending in envelopes of coins. :-) I did too. We have too many books in the house too, but I couldn't help myself. I'm not good at impulse control when it comes to books, I'm afraid.
Me time is such a rare occurrence anymore. I go to bed at the same time my daughter does because I get up so early for work. I need an extra day or two in the week . . .
LOL, Mouse reminds me of my youngest, she was a social butterfly as well, and talking was the worst of her offenses in school :) Yay for Fall tv coming back. Congrats on ten years of blogging..that is amazing!
ReplyDeleteKim - I hope talking is her worst offense. :-) I'm glad she's so social, especially considering I wasn't.
DeleteThanks!
We are currently learning to deal with more homework at the moment - it's tripled from last year and if we did in one go would take half a day. your daughter sounds like a star...better a social butterfly than a wallflower I think.
ReplyDeleteEmma - I've heard the homework doubles and triples as they get older. I'm not looking forward to that. Yes, I'm glad she's more of a social butterfly. I was definitely the wallflower.
DeleteGreat post Wendy. You had me at "Fae" and "libraries"! I'll be adding those for sure! I've never heard of Litsy. Is that like Goodreads?
ReplyDeleteNicole - Thank you! I really enjoy the series so far. :-)
DeleteLitsy is said to be a cross between Instagram and Goodreads. It's still rather new and not very complicated. Actually, there's not much to it from what I can tell so far.
What a wonderful post!!
ReplyDeleteLove the stories about your daughter. :)
Ten years of blogging is a long time...CONGRATS!! Your blog is lovely.
I need to check out Litsy...not sure what that is.
ENJOY the rest of your Sunday.
It is a pleasure meeting you.
Happy Hopping!!

Elizabeth - Thank you! I probably overshare about her, but she's too young to say so yet. :-)
DeleteI hope you have a great rest of the Sunday too, Elizabeth!
Hi Wendy. I have been blogging for about 18 months. I mostly blog about books, but sometimes other life events such as concerts I attend. I like blogging because it is a way for me to connect with other book lovers and learn about books I might enjoy. I also joined Litsy, but I have no idea how to use it! I'm usually really good with technology, but the app is not very self-explanatory. I need to go on the actual website and figure it all out! As for your lovely Mouse, try not to worry. I work in a Kindergarten class. Many of the kids have never been to school so the teacher is trying to install routines and habits that will serve them throughout their school careers. It takes time for kids (and their parents) to adjust. But I am surprised there is homework! It is Kindergarten, after all. If it is stressing you out, talk to the teacher to see if she really needs to do this. If she insists, perhaps the teacher can give you the homework on a Friday, so Mouse can do it over the weekend. I will start following you on GFC? or whichever method you use. You have a lovely blog. Best Wishes!
ReplyDeleteArdis - Congratulations for making it to nearly two years of blogging! It's great fun, isn't it? Sometimes a lot of work, but still fun. :-)
DeleteI'm still figuring out Litsy, so I'm glad to hear I'm not alone. The FAQ's weren't very helpful, were they? I guess we are supposed to just learn from what others are doing? That's the impression I got.
A friend of mine mentioned her kindergartener didn't have any homework. I'm a little envious! We were told from the start that there would be one sheet of math homework a day and language arts homework which is handed out Monday and turned in Friday. So far it's been mostly practicing sounds and letters and learning her sight words. I imagine it's all pretty standard and necessary--but it feels like a lot at the end of the day when we are trying to cram it all in before bedtime. There's also the required 15 minutes of reading, which is less homework and more habit for us now.
Thank you for visiting and following my blog! I've followed yours too (through the feedreader I use--Inoreader). I hope you have a great day!
"Homework Honeymoon" is a cute way of putting it. My mother runs the after school program at her school and always makes them finish their homework before leaving. I'm surprised Mouse's doesn't. I know for most families they don't sit down until late in the evening after all the other things like Scouts, practices and games to do homework and by then it's a battle. I hope you and Mouse can work out a good routine for homework.
ReplyDeleteCharlie - Mouse's after school program has homework time too, and we're working our way up to her finishing as much as she can while at school. She's quick to say she's all done when she's not, unfortunately, and so the staff and I have talked about that. I think it will be easier too when she's older and the assignments are more independent. There was one day last week in which Mouse had most of her work done and I was so happy. I wanted to kiss the staff at the after school program. All we had to do was do the reading. Hopefully we will all find our rhythm--and soon!
DeleteI love the woman who runs Mouse's after school program by the way. She's so full of spirit and energy.
You really should try My Cousin Rachel as it is really, really great! I will say no more :) I'm also a huge fan of the J.D. Robb series so I'm glad that you are enjoying them in audio form. The first book in this series wasn't my favorite but I do think they get better as the series goes on. I feel you on the homework front. We are constantly working to get it all done and correctly. Hope you have a great week!
ReplyDeleteSamantha - I don't know if I will get to My Cousin Rachel this year, but I will try to make it one of my must reads for next year. I'm enjoying the second book in the J.D. Robb series so far. I didn't like homework much when I was a student and now that I have a child who has to do it, I don't like it much either. LOL I hope you have a great week too!
DeleteHow nice that you had some rain! We've had about the same thing happening over here -- just a little bit of rain. Our condo is EXTRA cozy when it rains, I really like when it pours, and we're nice and dry inside! Anyway, I'm glad you guys had a nice day outdoors!
ReplyDeleteI'm SO looking forward to reading "The Invisible Library" series!! From the moment I first encountered it on Goodreads, I felt attracted to it. I'm glad you're enjoying these books!!
You know, I don't watch much TV, since I work at night (I get home around 10:00 PM). The rest of the time, I'm too busy blogging and reading (as well as dong household chores, of course)! Lol. However, I do want to watch "The Designated Survivor". I've heard it's AWESOME!! I am so sorry I missed out on "24", as I do like Kiefer Sutherland.
I saw "The Bookshop on the Corner" on Goodreads just yesterday, and immediately added it to my GR shelves. I SO want to read it!! The plot sounds enchanting!!
I also want to check out Melissa's post on bullet journaling. Sounds interesting!
I'm SO glad Parker is doing much better!! I hope and pray that the cancer does NOT return! :) Is that him in the picture, by the way? He's GORGEOUS!! Although I'm neither a cat nor a dog person (my preferred animal is the horse), I can certainly appreciate beautiful animals, and this one belongs in a cat show!
You know, the first time a child brings home a Scholastic book order form must be a very gratifying one for parents, if they happen to be readers, as you and your husband are. Of course, you're not going to order all the books she circled, but it's great that she's so interested! You have a budding little bookworm on your hands! And still, she's a social butterfly. How cute! I tend to be more like you -- an introvert. Lol.
OMG! Somehow, I missed your "Shelf Control" post! I'll go comment on it right away!!
As for your BBH answer, I'm totally blown away by the fact that you've been blogging for TEN years!! Well, CONGRATS TO YOU!! WOOT, WOOT!! You're a REAL blogging veteran!! Here's to TEN MORE YEARS, and beyond!!! YAAAAYY!!!
You've made a very important point in your answer -- that there are no right or wrong ways to blog. Some people are not going to like one's blog, no matter what one does or doesn't do. But the ones that DO like it, and comment regularly, become treasured friends, and that's what's important!! You're right that the blogosphere is a very friendly place. And when one is lucky enough to find a friend like you, well then, it's just WONDERFUL!!
LOVE your teddy bear, BTW!! ADORABLE!! :)
Thanks for sharing all of your "mews", whether bookish or from real life!! Also, thanks for visiting my blog, and leaving such a LOVELY comment on my BBH post!! Hope you and your family are having a GREAT Sunday, and will have a GREAT week coming up!! <3 :)
Maria - It wasn't nearly enough rain, but something is better than nothing, right? I love rainy days, but live in an area that doesn't see many of them unfortunately.
DeleteI hope you enjoy The Invisible Library when you get to it.
I hope you get to see The Designated Survivor. I had seen the first season of 24 and really liked it, but didn't get into the rest of the series. Maybe someday. I probably watch way more television than I should. I enjoy it too much to give it up completely for reading. I do a lot of my blogging prep with the television on though.
The gray cat in the photo is actually my Gracie. Parker's in the background. :-) Thank you. She knows she's beautiful too, I'm afraid. LOL
I'm not sure I'll make it ten more years in the blogosphere, but we'll see. Thank you for the kind words!
I hope you are enjoying your week!
Argh, homework. And also, argh, introverted parents with extroverted children. The exhaustion is real.
ReplyDeleteAnd now I'm going to go sit outside with my book! Thanks for the inspiration!
Wendy - I am happy my daughter is extroverted, but, yes, the exhaustion is very real. It's nice to know someone gets it! Thank you.
DeleteI hope you were able to sit outside for a while and read. We might as well enjoy it while we can!
I loved filling out my scholastic forms for books! What memories. I hope Mouse gets settled into a good routine for her homework. I am sure it's just a matter of getting used to it. I hope you guys have a great week ahead!
ReplyDeleteIliana - I have the same fond memories. :-) So far this week she's had a better attitude about her homework. If only I had more control over my work hours . . . I envy those able to pick up their kids right from school or shortly after.
DeleteI hope you are enjoying your week too!
I remember our first Scholastic older! Fondly and much like your story! Happy Reading to you and Mouse.
ReplyDeleteHeather - I'm looking forward to the books arriving! I forgot the wait is killer. LOL
DeleteThank goodness there's no sign of cancer with Parker. Hopefully it stays that way. Oh boy, it stinks trying to get homework done while tired. But yay for book order forms. I remember getting so excited when the orders came in.
ReplyDeleteChristy - Yes, we are relieved the cancer doesn't seem to have come back. He isn't happy about the extra dosage of medicine, unfortunately. We're looking forward to the book order coming in. Mouse asks me periodically how much longer we have to wait.
Delete10 years is amazing!! Congratulations! I'm coming up on 5 years. I've learned a lot and I continue learning! But I love every minute of it!
ReplyDeleteI'm currently reading Wendy Darling--Seas by Colleen Oakes. It's really good!
Chrissy - Thank you! Five years of blogging is pretty amazing too. :-)
DeleteI hope you are enjoying the Oakes book. I have yet to read anything by her.
For us, the Scholastic flyer always came out right before the school's book fair. I'd buy one book from the flyer and then buy more books AT the fair which was always more exciting for my kids.
ReplyDeleteTi - Ours came out right after. We went to the book fair on Back to School Night and walked out with several books then too. Oh well. One can never have enough books.
DeleteSounds like a fun weekend! And I'm glad to hear about Parker; that's definitely good news!
ReplyDeleteBook order forms are always hard to resist or turn down, isn't it? I don't always buy from those book order forms as sometimes I buy from bookstores. It's always fun to pick out books together. :)
Ah, homework. Our kindergartens don't have many of them but I suppose it's up to individual school. However, there's homework almost everyday in primary school and it can be quite challenging to get them to do them without a little coaxing or nagging. ;)
Hope you've a great week!
Melody - It was a nice weekend, thank you. :-) And definitely good news about Parker.
DeleteI've noticed that each school seems to handle homework differently, especially at this age. I'm hoping we can start her good homework habits now so I'm fighting less in the future, but we'll see. :-)
