Weekly Mews: Spring Roses, Birthday Wishes, Displaced Cat & My June TBR List Winner

I am linking up to the Sunday Post hosted by the wonderful Kim of Caffeinated Book Reviewer, where participants recap our week, talk about what we are reading, share any new books that have come our way, and whatever else we want to talk about. I am also linking up to Saturday Snapshot hosted by the amazing Melinda Ott of West Metro Mommy Reads.

I hope your weekend has gotten off to a good start. I am hoping I can get in a little reading today while my daughter is in the Wizard of Oz rehearsals. I usually end up chatting with the other parents or peeking through the window or curtain to see how the practice going. Tickets have gone on sale now that the venue is set and I put in my order. We are getting closer!

We are enjoying the weather, but missing the cooler temperatures already. My roses are taking full advantage of the spring season.

We had a quiet birthday for my husband. Check out this cake. It is totally him if ever a cake could be.

My daughter's school play was also this past week. Her class put on several skits of Aesop's Fables with songs match. It was such a cute performance. I could tell the children had put in a lot of hard work  to bring it all together. Mouse has just one more week of school left, and, from the sounds of it, it will be a fun week for the children.

My two cats are getting along more. Gracie still goes into jealous rages (okay, so maybe "rage" is a bit strong of a word) now and then, but I have to admit Nina sometimes deserves a swat given how she teases Gracie.

We are expecting my in-laws, from out of town later today. I spent part of yesterday moving furniture around to make room for the new pieces we are adding in as my in-laws downsize and prepare for their upcoming move. I am already wondering if we haven't said yes to too much.

What I Am Reading:  I am about halfway through Jennifer Ashley's cozy historical mystery, Scandal Above Stairs, the second in the Kat Holloway series, and enjoying it quite a bit. I also have started reading The Girl in the Green Silk Gown by Seanan McGuire, an urban fantasy novel about a hitchhiking ghost. It is really good as well!

What I Am Watching: I found myself watching the musical television show Galavant earlier in the week about a singing knight, a couple of princesses, and an evil king. I can see why it flopped as it really isn't that good. I watched the entire two seasons though. I could not look away. My husband, daughter and I started watching the first season of The Great British Baking Show. I do not normally like cooking shows of any kind, but I am enjoying this one. Everyone is so nice to each other!

What I Am Listening To: As I was rearranging furniture and cleaning house this week, I started listening to Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie. There's something to be said for these relatively short classics.

This Past Week In Reading Mews:

No reviews this week, I am afraid. I have not had time to sit down and really work on them. I just realized my last post was my 2000 published one. That's crazy.

Thank you for helping me decide what book from my TBR collection I should read next:

My TBR List is a meme hosted by the awesome Michelle at Because Reading. It’s a fun way to choose a book from your TBR pile to read. The 1st Saturday of every month, I will list 3 books I am considering reading and take a poll as to which you think I should read. I will read the winner that month, and my review will follow (unfortunately, not likely in the same month, but eventually--that's all I can promise).

It was so close! I thought for sure Nevernight was going to win given it was in the lead for awhile there, although not by much. In the end, Bring Me Their Hearts by Sarah Wolf won by one vote. I look forward to reading it! Thank you to all who voted.

Thank you for voting! I hope you all have a wonderful April and Happy Reading!

    1. Kay - Yes, it tasted just as good. :-) Thank you for the good luck wishes for Mouse. She is feeling a bit overloaded on rehearsals, but you should see the big smile on her face when she and the other children are practicing. I was telling my husband today how I hadn't imagined we would be "dance/theater parents" when we had Mouse.

    1. Ellen - Thank you! He had a nice birthday. :-) I did get a decent video of the play so my husband could see since he was unable to attend. I'm afraid I didn't get any blog-worthy photos of the performance. I am only willing to post back or side photos of my daughter on my blog these days--never her full face now that she's older. I did share a photo of her on Facebook though. I'd share that on FB, but I don't have the other parents' permission.

  7. That cake is awesome! Lol! I love the little kitty too. I'm allergic so we'll never have a cat, but I still love kittens. :) I'm reading Bring Me Their Hearts right now and really enjoying it, so I hope you do too!

    1. Tressa - It tasted really good too. :-) We are smitten with the new kitten. I am sorry to hear you are allergic to cats. I am too, actually. Lots of hand washing, vacuuming, dusting, laundry, and allergy medicine. Not necessarily in that order. I pretend it's all seasonal allergies, but really it's year round. I just don't like to blame it on the cats. LOL I think my allergy is mild compared to some though as I know people who even that won't work for. I am glad you are enjoying Bring Me Their Hearts! I look forward to reading it too. :-)

  8. Ha cute cake! Happy birthday to your husband. :) And glad to hear the cats are doing mostly well. A new addition is always a challenge but hopefully Gracie will secretly enjoy her new companion soon (they never like to admit it, right, but I think deep down they like it) ha ha.

The reviews I've seen for scandal Above Stairs all seem to be positive so far.

    Thanks for linking my post!

Yay for Bring Me their Hearts! Hope it's good. :)

  10. What a week! So happy for Mouse that she's discovered the acting bug and is in plays! And that cake... just wow! Happy birthday to your hubby. I'm going to check out your book suggestions further now. I think there's one or two I would definitely like to read such as Scandal Above Stairs.

Have a peaceful, restful week ahead!

    1. Rita -Since she began speaking, Mouse said she wants to be a singer when she grows up. She's excited about the upcoming musical and is already talking about having leading roles when she's older. I never thought I'd be a dance/theater parent, but here I am. I do not know if this is a passing fancy or a lifetime interest for her, but it will be interesting to see in time. Oh, do read Jennifer Ashley's mysteries! Her Kat Holloway series is so good.

  14. Amazing cake! I take it your husband likes burgers. LOL

Cute cat photos...and I love those roses, too.

I'm thinking that I would do more housework if I listened to audio books. Maybe? I don't have any proper listening equipment, though. iPod? I do love rearranging furniture, but I know I couldn't handle adding any pieces. Sigh.

Enjoy your week...and here are MY WEEKLY UPDATES

    1. Laurel-Rain - Haha! Yes, he likes his burgers. :-)

While the audiobooks do not motivate me to start cleaning per say, they do keep me cleaning when I might otherwise want to stop because I don't want to stop listening. So there is that. :-) I listen on my phone, actually.

We do not have room for the new furniture (although their old dining room table replaced our old one), but we did our best to make it work. I will have to take photos for next time. Not that anyone wants to see any of that. LOL

      Have a great week!

  27. Nina is queen of the laundry hamper! We have been thinking of getting a kitten. I thought my son would want another tortie because he loved his last cat so much, but he said no, it would make him sad. Every time I see Nina I think about how pretty they are. We will be having the same problem though because we have a ten year old cat. 😼

I hope you can post some photos of The Wizard of Oz. Mouse has been extra busy with musical theater! 🎦

The girl in the Green Silk Gown sounds intriguing. I'll have to have a look at it. Love your rose photos, too. Thanks for sharing. 2000 posts is amazing! Have a wonderful week. 🌞

    1. La La - Yes, she is. LOL I was feeling sorry for her when she first came the way my older cat was treating her, but now I feel sorry for my older cat. Nina looks so different than our orange tabby--which I think is a good thing. She's definitely not the cuddler he was. But she's still young yet, so who knows?

We are in high gear now for the musical. I'm trying to stay sane. LOL I can't even imagine what my daughter is feeling. She seems to be taking it all in stride, but I know she's a bit like me when it comes to feeling anxious.

  30. Gorgeous roses! I'm envious (in an entirely friendly way.) I'm not much of a gardener; I hate the heat, and that's not helpful if you're trying to garden in Virginia.

Happy birthday to your husband (great cake, BTW!) and best of luck to Mouse in The Wizard of Oz. It's such a fun show! Also, I hope your kitties come to a mutually-agreeable truce soon. The little one (Nina?) is so cute. I have a soft spot for torties.

Enjoy your week, and happy reading!
