I am in the middle of reading this month's TBR poll winner (thank you again to all who voted!). Broken Girls by Simone St. James is as good as so many of you have said!
Vermont, 1950. There's a place for the girls whom no one wants--the troublemakers, the illegitimate, the too smart for their own good. It's called Idlewild Hall. And in the small town where it's located, there are rumors that the boarding school is haunted. Four roommates bond over their whispered fears, their budding friendship blossoming--until one of them mysteriously disappears. . . .
Vermont, 2014. As much as she's tried, journalist Fiona Sheridan cannot stop revisiting the events surrounding her older sister's death. Twenty years ago, her body was found lying in the overgrown fields near the ruins of Idlewild Hall. And though her sister's boyfriend was tried and convicted of murder, Fiona can't shake the suspicion that something was never right about the case.
When Fiona discovers that Idlewild Hall is being restored by an anonymous benefactor, she decides to write a story about it. But a shocking discovery during the renovations will link the loss of her sister to secrets that were meant to stay hidden in the past--and a voice that won't be silenced. . . . [Goodreads Summary]
A weekly meme where readers share the first sentence of the book they are reading and say what they think. Hosted by the wonderful Gillion Dumas of Rose City Reader.
The sun vanished below the horizon as the girl crested the ridge of Old Barrons Road. Night, and she still had three miles to go.
My initial thoughts: It's dark and she is on foot with a long way to go to her destination. This doesn't bode well for her, I think.
A weekly meme in which readers share a random sentence or two from page 56 or 56% of the book they are reading. Hosted by the wonderful Freda of Freda's Voice.
Fiona stared at her ceiling in the dark, her eyes burning. It was incredible that tens of thousands of people could vanish from history without a single record. "Were the women Jews?" she asked.
"Very few, in fact," Ginette said. They were prisoners from countries occupied by the Nazis, communists, members of the Resistance, Gypsies, captured spies. There was also a certain type of prisoner the Nazis termed 'asocial.'"
"Asocial?"
"Prostitutes, destitute women, addicts and alcoholics, the mental ill. Women the Nazis simply didn't want society to support anymore, or women considered of low morals."
"Jesus Christ," Fiona said. "How horrible." [56%]
My initial thoughts: How horrible, indeed. Such a terrible time in our history.

Do you use NetGalley, Edelweiss, both, or neither? (submitted by Elizabeth @ Silver's Reviews)
I use both NetGalley and Edelweiss. More than I probably should given I have so many of my own books still to read that I keep putting off in order to read review books. I want to read all the books!
What about you?
I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! Be sure and tell me what you are reading and are up to!

Not sure where this book is heading but it doesn't sound like it is toward a happy place. My Friday Quotes
ReplyDeleteAnne - No, it doesn't, does it? Thank you for stopping by!
DeleteI have only Netgalley and it's becoming like a drug! I'm not able to read from my TBR pile anymore!
ReplyDeleteLaura - Yes! It's too easy to get drawn into NetGalley and want all the books. Thank you for visiting!
DeleteI really liked THE BROKEN GIRLS when I read it last year. Very Gothic - big plus for me. And yes, I do still use Edelweiss and NetGalley at times. Not as much as I used to. It's hard to break the habit though. Ha!
ReplyDeleteKay - I love Gothic. I am excited to finally be reading Broken Girls. I need to stay away from both NetGalley and Edelweiss--go on a ban of sorts, I think. For my own sake. Thank you for stopping by!
DeleteI loved this book! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts, Wendy.
ReplyDeleteMelody - I think I will too! Thank you for visiting!
DeleteThe Nazi's eugenic's program was horrible - I think to call it evil would not be an overstatement. The Broken Girls sounds like it would be a sad book.
ReplyDeleteEustacia - It was. To think of all the lives destroyed. Evil is definitely not an overstatement. Thank you for stopping by!
DeleteI feel like I've seen this book around, but I'm not sure where... It's not one that I'd unusally look at but something about it is really appealing to me. I'll have to see if I can get a copy through my library.
ReplyDeleteMy Friday Spotlight.
Louise - There has been a lot of positive buzz around it since it came out. If you do decide to give it a try, I hope you like it. Thank you for visiting!
DeleteI shiver whenever I think of the Nazis...and this book is one I've been eyeing. Thanks for sharing, and here's mine: “BEFORE SHE KNEW HIM”
ReplyDeleteLaurel-Rain - I do too. They did such terrible things. What humans are capable of--sometimes such great things, but also such evil things. Thank you for stopping by!
DeleteYour book sounds good to me. I use Netgalley and Edelweiss some but just haven't embraced ebooks yet.
ReplyDeleteKathy - I am really enjoying it so far. I do most of my reading via e-books these days. Thank you for visiting!

DeleteOoh, The Broken Girls sounds pretty good!
ReplyDeleteI'm still pretty new to book blogging, but I used to used NetGalley back when I was book blogging on my old book blog (make sense? My brain is a little scrambled today, I've had some wild stuff going on at home). I don't want to start requesting until my blog is a little more popular, but I'm hoping to again one day. :)
Stephanie - I am enjoying it so far. :-)
DeleteI sometimes wish I didn't know about NetGalley and Edelweiss. LOL
Now I just use NetGalley - and I know what you mean by needing to read your own books. :)
ReplyDeleteLauren - I try to mix my own books in, but they still end up being neglected more often than not. Thank you for stopping by!
DeleteSounds like a fascinating read!!! Happy weekend!
ReplyDeleteFreda - It is! I hope you have a good weekend too.
DeleteI add this one after reading a fw books that were similar. I need to get started on it. Good choice.

Suzanne - I loved it. One of my favorite reads this year, I think. I should stop saying yes to books. I need to read what I have . . .

ReplyDeleteCarole - I loved it. I look forward to reading more by St. James.
