Weekly Mews: Cranberry Orange Scones & How Is It Already the Middle of November?!

I am linking up to the Sunday Post hosted by Kim of Caffeinated Book Reviewer, where participants recap our week, talk about what we are reading, share any new books that have come our way, and whatever else we want to talk about. I am also linking The Sunday Salon hosted by Deb Nance of Readerbuzz where participants discuss what they are reading and other bookish topics.

What I Am Reading: My reading has been a bit slow so far this month. Or rather, less time for reading just for myself. Mouse and I recently read Ramona and Her Mother by Beverly Cleary and are now reading Katherine Paterson's Bridge to Terabithia. When I do fit in reading time for myself, I am still making my way through the short story collection, Together, Apart. I am enjoying it so far. I also started Leads and Lynxes by Rebecca Chastain, which I plan to finish this weekend.

What I Am Watching: I finished watching the final season of S.H.I.E.L.D. this past week, and started re-watching the first season of The 100. I had seen the first two seasons before, but never got around to watching the third when it came out--and now there's seven seasons! I thought it a good idea to just start from the beginning again.

As my family and I work our way through Buffy the Vampire Slayer again, we have also started re-watching Angel alongside it, interspersing episodes to follow their timeline. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed these shows.

I have also been watching holiday rom-com movies on Netflix.

Off the Blog: This past week was relatively uneventful. Just the usual for us: work, school, Zoom dance classes. My husband had to work Veteran's Day, but Mouse and I had the day off. I did not even get close to half the things done that I had hoped to, but Mouse and I enjoyed having some free time together.

We have been enjoying evening walks after Anjin and I get off work. The time change the end of October means we go after the dark so it's fairly quiet out. It's starting to get chilly too. A couple of the neighbors have already put up their Christmas decorations. I am looking forward to seeing more go up in the coming weeks.

Not much in the news has changed either this week--the number of COVID-19 cases continues to rise around the world and the U.S. President continues to deny he's lost the election as well as many of his supporters despite evidence to the contrary.

What I Am Grateful For: Fuzzy socks and cozy blankets; Starbucks peppermint hot chocolate and cranberry orange scones; reading with my daughter; and all of you.

Nina didn't want to climb into her new box.

Thank you for helping me decide what book from my TBR collection I should read next:

My TBR List is a meme hosted by the awesome Michelle at Because Reading. It’s a fun way to choose a book from your TBR pile to read. The 1st Saturday of every month, I will list 3 books I am considering reading and take a poll as to which you think I should read. I will read the winner that month, and my review will follow (unfortunately, not likely in the same month, but eventually--that's all I can promise).

Thank you to everyone who voted in this month's poll! How Rory Thorne Destroyed the Multiverse by K. Eason won with eight votes over Ignite the Stars by Maura Milan (5 votes) and Chilling Effect by Valerie Valdes (3 votes). I am really looking forward to starting Eason's duology!

Thank you for voting! I hope you all have a wonderful week! Happy Reading!

  1. You seem to be reading quite a large number of books. I've only read a few this week, and some were re-reads.

    1. Mae - I suppose I do have a lot of books I am in the middle of right now: the two I am reading with my daughter, a short story book, and a novel for myself. No wonder I can't finish anything. LOL Thank you for visiting!

  2. My youngest and I have enjoyed the Ramona books too. I always felt Bridge to Terabithia was rather sad- but it's been a while since I read it so can't quite remember the ending! it's worth a re-read I beliee.

    1. Jeane - This was our first Beverly Cleary book (together, I mean--I've read many of her books before) and I'm so glad she liked it and wants to read more. I read Bridge to Terabithia a couple or so years ago for the first time and thought it was terribly sad. I was surprised when Mouse pulled it off her shelf and asked if we could read it. The print in my copy is so tiny . . . I need reading glasses, I think. LOL Thank you for stopping by!

  3. My reading has been down too. And ooh The 100! That series has really changed from its early seasons, I'm curious what you'll think as you move along. I like that show. :)

Hope you have a nice week ahead. :)

  6. Hi there! Like I've said last week, I don't know any of the books on your pol, but yea - now you can introduce me to some new ones!

My week was also rather uneventful, just busy with work. I have Bridge to Terabithia on my Classics Club list, hope to get to it early in the new year. Have read it years ago.

Hope you will have a wonderful week ahead.

  7. OH YAY! the book I picked won! I can't wait to see what you think of it. I have been slow with reading this entire year but it has been a rough year.

Love a cat in a box! Mine are always getting into boxes. No Idea why they are so fascinated with them

Have a great week Wendy! Happy Reading!

  9. With all the crazyness going on with your election, it is good to hear you are managing to find joy in the little things, like reading with your daughter, taking walks and comfort watching. You've reminded me I used to adore Buffy the Vampire Slayer, maybe I need a re-watch, too! Take care and happy reading in the coming week. 🙂

    1. Jessica - It is crazy. If you would have asked me five years ago if everything that's happened since the current president took office was possible, I wouldn't have thought so. Especially what's going on right now. It's very disappointing. Thank you for stopping by!

  10. Glad you have good books to read and good TV shows to watch. I love both Bridge to Terabithia and Buffy the Vampire Slayer! Hope you have a great week. :)

  11. I can't wait to see what you think of How Rory Thorne Destroyed the Multiverse. It sounds like it will be fun.

I remember the shock of Bridge to Terabithia. I read that as a grownup, but it was still a terribly sad story.

We have talked about watching The 100, but we haven't started it yet.

Cooler weather here, too. Love fuzzy socks and cozy blankets at this time of the year.

    1. Deb - I hope I will enjoy it too!

Yes, I read Bridge to Terabithia a couple or so years ago for the first time and remember how sad it was. My husband and I had been talking about sad children's books the other night with my daughter listening in (she commented on why anyone would name a dog Old Yeller), and Bridge to Terabithia had come up. So, I was surprised when she pulled it off the shelf last week to ask if we could read it next. She does not like sad books (understandably so at her age). I don't know if she remembers it was one of the books we'd mentioned was sad . . .

      Thank you for visiting!

  12. Yay the book I want to hear your thoughts won. It sounds like a nice, normal week. I'm in the changeover from daily outdoor projects to indoor ones. Next year there won't be quite as much as I planted so many perennials this year. This fall seems to be flying by, but January can't be here soon enough. I think I just want to take a break. Happy reading and stay well!

  14. This year has been so hard for me reading wise but I'm so excited for the Thanksgiving holiday and hopefully devoting some time to reading! Granted I'm concerned about the next several weeks with the rise in COVID-19 numbers. It's so awful but I'm hopeful that our next administration is really going to make a change and of course a vaccine! Hope you have a great week ahead!

    1. Iliana - Me too! There are some overdue projects I need to get to while I'm on vacation next week, but I do hope to get in some decent reading time. That's the plan anyway. :-) I hope you are able to as well!

I do hope things will improve with the administration coming in. It has to to some degree, I'd think.

      Thank you for stopping by!

  20. Bridge to Terabithia is a book that I read to my students each year. They realized I was human when I cried at the end of it every time I read it. Nothing beats spending time with our kiddos. I am off to pinterest now to see if I can find a copycat recipe for Starbuck's cranberry orange scones. Have a great week Wendy.

  21. I padded the Veterans Day holiday with days off afterward so I had a nice little break. I was not productive either and could care less. Yes, I had plans but what called to me the most was the couch and a good nap. I indulged. I had not been sleeping all that great during the election so I feel like I need to make up for that. I am no spring chicken, after all. LOL.

    1. Ti - That was smart! I might have done that, but my daughter was out of school because of the teacher/parent conferences for the two days I took off, and with my taking time off at Thanksgiving and Christmas, I decided that was enough. I am glad you got some rest! It was much deserved!

      Thank you for stopping by!
