A weekly meme where readers share the first sentence of the book they are reading and say what they think. Hosted by the amazing Gillion Dumas of Rose City Reader.
It's a widely known fact that most moms are ready to kill someone by eight thirty A.M. on any given morning. On the particular morning of Tuesday, October eighth, I was ready by seven forty-five. [opening of of Finlay Donovan is Killing It]
A weekly meme in which readers share a random sentence or two from page 56 or 56% of the book they are reading. Hosted by the wonderful Freda of Freda's Voice. The element of surprise was probably the more sensible approach here. After all, what would I ask the woman to say? Attention, [Name Withheld to Avoid Spoiler]. The contract killer you hired is in the lobby to see you. I smiled tightly at the woman. "I'll just catch up to her in class, thanks." [excerpt from 56% of Finlay Donovan is Killing It]
Earlier in the week, I finished reading this hilarious novel featuring a novelist who gets mistaken as a hired killer called Finlay Donovan Is Killing It by Elle Cosimano. I actually had not intended to read it right when I did, but once I read the opening paragraph I found I could not stop. Although "kill" might be a strong word, I definitely can relate to Finlay's feelings in that opening scene! I have had days like that too.
Edgar-Award nominee Elle Cosimano’s adult debut Finlay Donovan Is Killing It is the first in a witty, fast-paced mystery series, following struggling suspense novelist and single mom Finlay Donovan, whose fiction treads dangerously close to the truth as she becomes tangled in real-life murder investigations... Does Finlay Donovan Is Killing It sounds like something you would want to read? What are you reading right now?
Originally a feature called Last Year I Was Reading created by Maria from ReadingMaria. I liked it enough to continue on my own, but have tweaked it
to feature Five Years Ago I Was Reading.
(I would have gone back ten, but I read so little in 2011)
I have been reading a lot of crime fiction as of late, or so it seems. All quite different from one another. Five years ago at this time, I had just finished a novella called Slaying Dragons by Sasha L. Miller, featuring two heroines, one warrior and one mage, who join forces to slay dragons, all the while falling in love with one another. I really enjoyed all the elements in this one and my only complaint was that it was not longer. (The book cover is linked to GoodReads)
Have you read Slaying Dragons? If so, what did you think? What were you reading five years ago?
read or unread, or bookish things, that share a common theme.
My father's 78th birthday would have been this weekend. He has been gone almost 9 1/2 years now, but I still think of him often. He and my mom always made sure I was surrounded by books growing up. My dad was a fairly eclectic reader, enjoying a wide range of fiction and nonfiction. Mysteries were among his favorites. Today I am sharing the names of five authors whose books he enjoyed reading. I actually have only read three of the authors on this list.
J.A. Jance
Tony Hillerman
James Rollins
Louis L'Amour
J.D. Robb
Have you read any of these authors? Was your parent/guardian a reader? If so, who were some of their favorite authors? Are they authors you enjoy reading too?
Every Friday Coffee Addicted Writer from Coffee Addicted Writer poses a question which participants respond on their own blogs within the week (Friday through Thursday). They then share their links at the main site and visit other participants blogs.
Do you share books? If so, do you have a system to keep track of whom you lend books to? (submitted by Elizabeth @ Silver's Reviews)
I rarely loan out books and so do not have a system for tracking who I lend them to. If I do loan out a book, it is to only a very small select group of people I trust. Most of them live in my house. Or my mom. I know where to find them can count on them to return the book back to me, which is probably my biggest concern in terms of lending out a book. More often than not though, I am likely to only "loan" out books I do not expect back or at least will not cry over if I do not get back.
I have never tried e-sharing a book, although I know that is an option on some platforms (I don't think it counts when my husband downloads and reads one of my books on his e-reader since we are on a family account).
What about you?
I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! Be sure and tell me what you are reading and are up to!

I've heard of 'Finlay Donovan is Killing It' but had never gotten around to reading it. Your excerpts have pushed it right to the top of the list though! The idea of revisiting your reads from 5 years ago is amazing, although I'd probably run into some embarrassing ones as well. My dad is also a big lover of literature although he doesn't get a lot of time to read. He is definitely a major part of why I'm such an avid reader. I also love your icons for the memes, they're beautiful! I hope you have a lovely weekend and do drop by my Friday Post if you have the time! - Juli @ A Universe in Words
ReplyDeleteJuli - I hope you enjoy Finlay Donovan is Killing It when you read it. It's such a fun read. My dad always had a book going.
DeleteThanks! My husband made the meme buttons for me. :-)
Thank you for visiting!
I would definitely read this book. Thanks for sharing it.
ReplyDeleteCan't say that I have heard of Slaying Dragons, but love the cover.
My father-in-law and your dad seem to like the same books. Thinking of you this weekend.

Cheryl - I really like the cover of Slaying Dragons too. Thank you for your kind thoughts! I hope you have a great week.
DeleteHa, yeah- I don't lend books out anymore either. I used to- once in a great while with careful selection- but there were a few I never got back. My husband doesn't even ask to borrow one of my books- he's rather rough on them and knows I would get upset to see the covers folded back and pages curled and maybe a spill on it... so if I'm reading something he's interested in, we try to find it at the library!
ReplyDeleteJeane - That happened to me too many times--not getting books back. My husband always worries when I read his graphic novels--wanting to make sure I hold them just so. LOL As far as I know I have never damaged one. Thank you for stopping by!
DeleteThe excerpts are fascinating and are tempting me to pick up this book.
ReplyDeleteAs for the authors, I have read some J. D. Robb, but mostly her alter (Nora Roberts).
Thanks for sharing, and here's mine: “THE PERFECT GUESTS”
Laurel-Rain - It's definitely a good escape book. A bit over the top but fun. :-) Thank you for visiting!
DeleteIt is so fun looking back at what I was reading 5 years ago! Here's my post:

Colletta - Yes, I agree! Thank you for stopping by!
DeleteHooray for your current read! I'm excited by the buzz for this book and hope to read it soon. Enjoy it and have a nice weekend!
ReplyDeleteCatherine - I hope you enjoy it when you read it! Thank you for visiting!
DeleteI also only lend books to family because I can happily turn their house upside down until I find it again! I love the graphic you found, though I would replace you have 24 hours with "I'll think about it"
ReplyDeleteLouise - Haha! Yes, there is that. I have to agree with you on the graphic and making that minor change. :-) Thank you for stopping by!
DeleteThat 'Can You Borrow My Book' chart is hilarious. I hardly ever loan out books because I've had too many either not get returned or come back damaged. And both my parents read all the time; it's why I love books so much myself. And I know what you mean about still missing your dad. My dad passed away two and a half years ago and I still miss him a lot. As for the books your dad loved, Louis L'Amour and James Rollins are both favs of mine. Have a great weekend! :D
ReplyDeleteLark - Same here. I have had too many not returned. As a result, I am very picky about who I loan books too and which books. I am sorry about your dad. We never stop missing them. Thank you for visiting!
DeleteMy mom was a reader and she loved romance. We used to trade books back and forth when she was still alive.
ReplyDeleteMary - That's such a sweet memory. My mom and I read some of the same books. We live too far apart to really share copies often. And most of mine tend to be e-copies these days. Thank you for stopping by!
DeleteFirst of all, "Finlay Donovan is Killing It" sounds like exactly the book I need to read right now. I love that beginning, sets the tone perfectly.
ReplyDeleteYour dad had a similar taste in mysteries to me. Those are all great authors. My dad was a different story. He was a great big guy with a rough physical job, but he loved to read romances, the sweeter the better. He went through several a week.
Roberta - It's such a fun read. Not too serious. I hope you enjoy it if you read it!
DeleteI love that your dad enjoyed romances. I was surprised when I first discovered my dad liked J.D. Robb, but he never minded the romance. Thank you for visiting!
I'm glad you're liked this one!
ReplyDeleteLauren @ Always Me
Lauren - Thank you!
DeleteYou had me at "witty, face-paced mystery". Enjoy. My book is Writers and Lovers
ReplyDeleteAnne - I hope you give it a try! Thank you for stopping by!
DeleteMy parents were not readers but I was an only child for sixteen years! that is how the reading kicked in and a lending library (very unusual in my part of the world just down the road). Also excellent English literature teachers in school, particularly a young nun who just drew us all in with her choices in reading!
ReplyDeleteMystica - It sounds like you had some good influences to help you develop a love for reading. Thank you for visiting!
DeleteFinlay Donovan sounds like a really fun read. Something positive, funny, and uplifting sounds perfect right now.
ReplyDeleteHelen - It was fun and a nice escape. :-) Thank you for stopping by!
DeleteMy Dad was a huge Louis L'Amour fan, he read mostly non-fiction but those books I think he had all of them!
ReplyDeleteKathryn - I think my dad had all the L'Amour books too. Thank you for visiting!
DeleteLove comedy novels. I'll be sur eto add your recommendation. May I recommend Samantha Irby, 'Wow, No Thank You'
ReplyDeleteTrin - Thank you for the recommendation of Samantha Irby's book. I will have to look for it. Thank you for stopping by!
DeleteLove the meme about loaning books! I have learned who to not lend books to. My mom tends to keep them for years. I know where to find those though! Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteLeslie - I have learned who not to lend books to too, unfortunately. I hope you have a great week too! Thank you for visiting.
DeleteFinlay Donovan is Killing It looks great. I have to add that one to my list. Hope you have a great week!
ReplyDeleteYvonne - It was a great read. A good escape from reality. I hope you have a great week too. Thank you for stopping by!
DeleteI love JD Robb, I’m slowly working my way through the In Death series, it’s such a good read.
ReplyDeleteHeather - I have listened to the first couple of In Death books. I am not sure when I will get to the next one as my audiobook reading is non-existent these days. Thank you for visiting!
DeleteOhhh Finlay Donovan Is Killing It sounds interesting and something I'll definitely want to pick up! 😍
ReplyDeleteA queen romance?! Just added Slaying Dragons to my TBR! 🤩
I've never read from any of the authors but I've heard a lot about J. D. Robb 🤔 Neither of my parents are reader 😅
I didn't know one could lend e-books? 🤔 I haven't lend anyone books just because I mostly read e-books 🥺
Kitten - Finlay Donovan is Killing It was a fun read. I do recommend it! And I hope you do give Slaying Dragons a try. I really enjoyed it.
DeleteI know that the some books are available for lending on the Kindle, although it's not a feature I've paid much attention to so I'm not too familiar with it.
Thank you for stopping by!
Oooh, those snippets are so good! This sounds like a fantastic and fun read. I definitely want to check it out. Thanks for sharing! Hope you have a wonderful week! :)
ReplyDeleteAshley - It was a fun one. I really enjoyed it. :-) Thank you for visiting!
DeleteI have never read Slaying Dragons but it sounds interesting. I didn't know that you could share e-books either. I don't share any of my books though. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteJamie - Slaying Dragons seems to be one of those hidden gems. I liked it quite a bit.
DeleteKindle has a lending feature for some books. It's not something I ever really used myself though.
Thank you for stopping by!
What a great book opening! I have been on the fence about picking this one up but you have convinced me. I am going to see if I can get a copy from my library.
ReplyDeleteCarole - Isn't it? I really enjoyed this one. It was a bit over the top, but a fun read. Thank you for visiting!
DeleteHa, I love that opening! I can for sure relate to that lol. Sounds like a fun, interesting read. Slaying Dragons sounds really interesting, too!
ReplyDeleteSammie - Both were good! Thank you for stopping by!
DeleteI used to lend books to my primary school schoolmates but sometimes the books came back wrinkled and dog-eared, and it pained me. As the years go, most of the friends around me are mostly non-readers or they've no time to read. I think most people would rather borrow books from the libraries nowadays considering it's so much convenient and lesser obligations, ha.
ReplyDeleteMelody - You make a good point. Like you, most of the people I know aren't readers, and if they are they check books out from the library. Thank you for visiting!
