"Can you recommend a great book?" [from the introduction of I'd Rather Be Reading]
In David Lodge's campus novel Changing Places, two college professors--one American, one British--swap teaching roles for a year. [Opening of chapter one, "Confess Your Literary Sins" from I'd Rather Be Reading]With just that one question I am hooked. The opening is a question I both love and hate. Too often my mind goes blank for a few minutes, but when I finally am able to think clearly again, I sometimes cannot stop thinking of recommendations. Though I hate to recommend books without knowing what a person likes to read.
1. For beautifully styled bookshelves, follow this decorator's rule of thumb: each bookshelf should hold one-third books, one-third accessories, and one third empty space.2. You're a book lover; you don't have enough shelves to begin with, Ignore the decorator. [excerpt from page 56 of I'd Rather Be Reading]
For so many people, reading isn't just a hobby or a way to pass the time--it's a lifestyle. Our books shape us, define us, enchant us, and even sometimes infuriate us. Our books are a part of who we are as people, and we can't imagine life without them.
I'd Rather Be Reading is the perfect literary companion for everyone who feels that way. In this collection of charming and relatable reflections on the reading life, beloved blogger and author Anne Bogel leads readers to remember the book that first hooked them, the place where they first fell in love with reading, and all of the moments afterward that helped make them the reader they are today. Known as a reading tastemaker through her popular podcast What Should I Read Next?, Bogel invites book lovers into a community of like-minded people to discover new ways to approach literature, learn fascinating new things about books and publishing, and reflect on the role reading plays in their lives. While considering books to use for this week's Connect Five, I came across I'd Rather Be Reading on my bookshelf and decided I didn't want to put it back until I read it. It is a quick read and I am enjoying it so far.

Have you ever searched out theme songs for your favorite books? (submitted by Julie @ JadeSky)
While I have not come up with my own ideas of theme songs for my favorite books, I sometimes will seek out songs on an author's playlist if they include one at the back of their book. It's always fun to see what music authors associate with their own characters and books.
Once--okay, three or four times--I bought CD's (or were they cassettes? It was a long time ago) of music recorded specifically for a series of books by Mercedes Lackey. I fell in love with her Valdemar fantasy series and maybe became a little obsessed. When I heard about the CD's and that that author had written many of the songs, I could not help myself. It was my introduction to filk music (music with a science fiction or fantasy theme and often a kind of folksy sound). Some of the songs even became songs I would sing to my daughter during her younger years. You can sometimes find me still singing parts of the songs now and then. [edited to add: My husband came downstairs last night and caught my daughter and I listening to a couple of the songs I had found on You Tube. Oh, the memories!]
I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! Be sure and tell me what you are reading and are up to!

I love these kind of books. I always add books to my TBR that they talk about and then I forget later why I added them. Ha! My Friday quotes are here
ReplyDeleteAnne - That happens to me too. Haha. THank you for visiting!
DeleteI just came off a blog which detailed a book Lost in Paris by Elizabeth Thompson. Escapist, family saga, two timelines all the elements of a good read.
ReplyDeleteMystica - That sounds good! I will have to look for it. Thank you for stopping by!
DeleteSounds like a great book! I find book recommendations so hard to give without knowing a preferred genre though!
ReplyDeleteEustacia - Same here. I need to know more about a person before I can recommend a book. Thank you for visiting!
DeleteLove the spine poem! And I was shaking my head right along with you until I got to tip 2. I should probably keep my shelves a little more organised but I love filling them with as many books as possible! I do like it when authors have their own playlist for books or characters, although I don't always connect to the songs in the same way! I hope you have a lovely weekend!

Juli - Thank you. It's fun trying to put together poems using book titles. I know what you mean; I do not always connect the songs authors have to their books or characters in their playlists. It's fun to see what might have inspired them though, isn't it? Thank you for stopping by!
DeleteI’d Rather Be reading Sounds utterly charming!
ReplyDeleteVerushka - It is! Thank you for visiting!

DeleteI like the sound of I'd Rather Be Reading. I do mix my books with other objects...trinkets, like literary mugs, and family photos. But books are the main thing.
ReplyDeleteHere's mine: “SURVIVE THE NIGHT”
Laurel-Rain - I just have too many books. I tell myself someday I might be able to do something like you do, but I haven't reached that point yet. Thank you for visiting!
DeleteI have I'd Rather Be Reading on my shelf--the cover is so comforting and quietly beautiful.
ReplyDeleteCatherine - Yes, I love that cover too! Thank you for stopping by!
DeleteI loved those Mercedes Lackey books too! I didn't know she had produced music to go with them.
ReplyDeleteLouise - Yes! I imagine them as the songs the bards in the series might be singing. Thank you for visiting!
DeleteI'd Rather Be Reading sounds wonderful. I'll have to look for that one. I'm always hesitant to recommend books unless I really know the persons likes and dislikes.
ReplyDeleteYvonne - I do recommend I'd Rather Be Reading! Thank you for stopping by!
DeleteI can definitely relate to those quotes from "I'd Rather Be Reading." I will look for the book and for the podcast, too.
ReplyDeleteMy spine poem from a couple years ago: https://blog.wrappedinfoil.com/2019/08/book-spine-poem/
Roberta - I've listened to a couple episodes of the podcast and enjoy it. I hope you do get a chance to read the book and check out the podcast. Thank you for sharing your spine poem with me--I really liked it. Thank you also for visiting!
DeleteI'd Rather Be Reading and everything else by Anne Bogel are on my TBR. I'll have to get it from the library soon.
ReplyDeleteKatherine - I hope you get a chance to read it! Thank you for stopping by!
DeleteWhilst arguably pleasing to the eye, I love both my books and bits n pieces too much too consider this decorators rule of thumb. Not enough shelving space for all our books as it is, like yourself accessories tend to be on top of/in front of books.
ReplyDeleteLoving your Book Spine poetry. A while since I have done any, I'm feeling quite inspired.
Felicity - There is room for both that way. :-) If you do decide to make put together a spine poem, I would love to read it. Thank you for visiting!
DeleteI am still laughing at "one third empty space" on your bookshelves. Lol. I cram as many books as I can in mine. And what's an accessory??😉
ReplyDeleteTammy - I know, right? I can't even imagine that! LOL Thank you for stopping by!
DeleteI loved Bogel's I'd Rather Be Reading...and definitely related to a lot of it. :D
ReplyDeleteLark - I am finding it extremely relatable too. :-) Thank you for visiting!
DeleteMy bookshelves don't look like that either. There's no empty space on mine. lol
ReplyDeleteMary - Any empty spaces is quickly filled. LOL Thank you for stopping by!
DeleteThat does sound like an interesting book to read for tis booklover, but my bookshelves have almost no accessories and no empty space. I might have to try some spine poetry, I might find a book on my shelves that I forgot all about. Have a wonderful weekend, Wendy.
ReplyDeleteCarla - Yes, do try some spine poetry! It's quite fun. :-) Thank you for visiting!
DeleteI'd Rather Be Reading sounds like a charming book. I had to laugh at that second tip in the 56 excerpt. So true, lol! Thanks for sharing! :)
ReplyDeleteAshley - Thank you for stopping by!
DeleteTip 2 made me laugh, especially since it's exactly what I was thinking. It sounds like such an interesting read so I hope you enjoy it. :)
ReplyDeleteSuzanne - I am! Thank you for visiting!
