Happy August! I had not meant to stay away from blogging for so long (again), but here we are, nearly a month later . . . It's been quite a month. My car was in the shop for about a week for repairs. Thank goodness I was working from home that week!
My husband and I went on a little weekend getaway to the mountains for our 25th wedding anniversary. It was over all too soon--I love the mountains and being surrounded by all the glorious trees. It's my happy place.
Mouse, Anjin and I also took a road trip recently to Utah to visit my in-laws. We had planned to make the trip last year but COVID struck our household. The drive was hot but beautiful, especially the drive through the Virgin River Gorge in Arizona. On the way home, we stopped by the M&M World Store in Las Vegas, Nevada just because.
While our Utah trip was one we had wanted to make for awhile now, this time it was marred by my father-in-law's recent diagnosis of metastatic lung cancer. He is on oxygen and has a bad cough, but home with his son and wife. It was nice to spend time with him and the rest of the family and hard to say goodbye when it was time to go.
What are you reading?
My TBR List is hosted by the awesome Michelle at Because Reading. It’s a fun way to choose a book from your TBR pile to read. The 1st Saturday of every month, I will list 3 books I am considering reading and let you vote for my next read during that month. My review will follow (unfortunately, not likely in the same month, but eventually--that's all I can promise).
Mouse's first day of school is this coming Friday (I can't believe it either), and so we have been hitting the stores to prepare for this coming year. I have school on the brain! Hence why all my TBR poll choices this month have school settings. Whether you have read the book, want to read it, or just like the cover, let me know which one you think I should read next!
The first book of Jenny Colgan's delightful new four-part series, set at a charming English boarding school on the sea.
Maggie went to the window and opened it wide, inhaling the lovely salt air off the sea. Why had she never lived by the sea before? Why had she always looked out on housing estates and not the little white hulls of trawlers bobbing off in the distance?
It's gloriously sunny in Cornwall as the school year starts at the little boarding school by the sea. Maggie, the newest teacher at Downey House, is determined to make her mark. She's delighted by her new teaching job, but will it come at the expense of her relationship with her safe, dependable boyfriend Stan?
Simone is excited and nervous: she's won a scholarship to the prestigious boarding school and wants to make her parents proud. Forced to share a room with the glossy, posh girls of Downey House, she needs to find a friend, fast.
Fliss is furious. She's never wanted to go to boarding school and hates being sent away from her home. As Simone tries desperately to fit in, Fliss tries desperately to get out.
Over the course of one year, friendships will bloom and lives will be changed forever. Life at the Little School by the Sea is never dull... [Goodreads Summary]
Murder at a London Finishing School (Beryl and Edwina Mystery #7) by Jessica Ellicott
American adventuress Beryl Halliwell and prim and proper Brit Edwina Davenport team up once again as enquiry agents to solve a mystery at their alma mater in this historical English village mystery set just after World War I.
Neither Beryl nor Edwina are the least bit interested in attending events at their alma mater, Miss Dupont’s Finishing School. Their lives are very full indeed in the village of Walmsley Parva. However, when a letter arrives from Miss Dupont herself requesting their help in a professional capacity, they reluctantly pack their bags for London.
Upon arrival, they learn from Miss Dupont that her business has seen a steep decline since the days before World War I and that now she is concerned a saboteur is attempting to damage the school’s reputation. Students have reported items missing, damaged possessions, and strange noises in the night. Some of the girls even insist ghostly forces are at play.
Then a former classmate of theirs and mother of a prospective student is found dead on the school grounds. The roll call of suspects is long, and if Beryl and Edwina are to have a ghost of a chance of solving the murder, they can’t rule out the possibility that Miss Dupont herself may have finished off the victim . . . The Lost Girls of Willowbrook by Ellen Marie Wiseman
Fact, fiction, and urban legend blend in this haunting story about a young woman mistakenly imprisoned at Willowbrook State School, the real-life institution later shuttered for its horrendous abuses.
Sage Winters always knew her sister was a little different even though they were identical twins. They loved the same things and shared a deep understanding, but Rosemary—awake to every emotion, easily moved to joy or tears—seemed to need more protection from the world.
Six years after Rosemary’s death from pneumonia, Sage, now sixteen, still misses her deeply. Their mother perished in a car crash, and Sage’s stepfather, Alan, resents being burdened by a responsibility he never wanted. Yet despite living as near strangers in their Staten Island apartment, Sage is stunned to discover that Alan has kept a shocking secret: Rosemary didn’t die. She was committed to Willowbrook State School and has lingered there until just a few days ago, when she went missing.
Sage knows little about Willowbrook. It’s always been a place shrouded by rumor and mystery. A place local parents threaten to send misbehaving kids. With no idea what to expect, Sage secretly sets out for Willowbrook, determined to find Rosemary. What she learns, once she steps through its doors and is mistakenly believed to be her sister, will change her life in ways she never could imagined . . . [Goodreads Summary]

We stopped at Barnes and Noble in both St. George, Utah and Henderson, Las Vegas on our trip to Utah, and I couldn't resist adding to my TBR pile.

New to my shelves:
Three Assassins by Kotaro Isaka
The Masterful Cat is Depressed Again Today, Vol. 3 by Hitsuji Yamada
The Exiled Fleet (The Divide #2) by J.S. Dewes
What new books made it onto your shelf recently?
My family and I visited the Hollywood Pantages Theatre last month and saw the musical Beetlejuice. It was hilarious and very well done. Yet another reminder of how much we love seeing live productions!
My daughter's Girl Scout troop unanimously voted to close out the summer with a trip to the movie theater to see the Barbie. My husband and I tagged along since we both wanted to see the movie too. It was a big hit with everyone.
Television wise, my husband and I have been watching Bosch and the second season of Lincoln Lawyer, both of which we are enjoying. I am tempted to pick up where I left off in my Michael Connelly reading! It's been years since I last read one of his books.
What have you watched recently?
I hope you have a great week! Let me know what you have been reading!

Glad you had a nice visit with family even if it was bitter sweet. And congrats on your 25th anniversary!
ReplyDeleteMark - Thank you!
DeleteI'm so sorry to hear about your father-in-law, I'm glad you and your family had a good visit with him!
ReplyDeleteEustacia - Thank you!
DeleteI love that drive from further south up towards St.George Utah. Your trip sounds like fun, though it’s very concerning about the illness of your father in law. Good luck to all.
ReplyDeletebest, mae at maefood.blogspot.com
Mae - Thank you!
DeleteThat journal is gorgeous! Sorry to hear about your father-in-law but so nice you were able to spend some time together. I voted on your next TBR but honestly, they all look good. Hope you have a great week!
ReplyDeleteBarb - I think so too. I just love that cover. Not that I need another journal. LOL Thank you for your kind words. I am glad we were able to make the trip too. And thank you for voting! I hope you have a great week too.
DeleteYour trip sounds excellent despite the bad news about your FIL. I'd be eager to read any of your August TBR books. I can't choose between them. Come see my week here. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteKathy - It was nice to get away for awhile, but, yeah, the purpose for our trip wasn't the one we hoped it would be. Thank you for visiting!
DeleteI'm glad you were able to get some nice travels in before school starts. It seems to start sooner these days or maybe they have just changed the timing of the year. When I was young we started 3rd week of August and got out at the end of May. My daughter didn't start until after Labor Day and went to the 2nd week of June. But a bunch of places seem to start earlier in August now.
ReplyDeleteAnne - Books of My Heart This is my Sunday Post
Anne - It was nice to get away. I'm with you. School does seem to start earlier every year. I remember when I was in school, the first day was always the day after Labor Day. Mouse's school used to start a little later in August and get out the first week in June until a few years ago. Something to do with matching other school districts and their sports' seasons. Now it's earlier in the month and she will get out in May. Thank you for stopping by!
DeleteSounds like a lovely trip and a good time to visit and spend some time with your father-in-law. I went with Welcome to the School by the Sea because it seems like such a good transition book with the sea for summer and the school for autumn.
ReplyDeleteJoy - I am glad we were able to make the trip and wish we could have stayed longer. Thank you for voting! I was thinking something similar when I saw the cover of Welcome to the School by the Sea. It has a summer feel to it. :-) Thank you for visiting!
DeleteSounds like you've had a busy and fun summer. I'm sorry to hear about your father-in-law! Such a tough diagnosis. I'm glad you got to spend some time with him this summer. And I had to vote for the finishing school book! Good luck getting back into the school routine. :D
ReplyDeleteLark - It has been busy. And here I was worried we wouldn't be doing much at all! Thank you for your kind thoughts and for voting!
DeleteHappy 25th Anniversary!! A mountain getaway sounds wonderful!
ReplyDeleteJoAnn - Thank you! I love being in the mountains. Add a lake and I'm in heaven. Thank you for visiting!
DeleteSo sorry to hear about your father-in-law. Sounds like it was a good trip, though. Welcome to the School by the Sea looks really good. I have to add that to my wishlist. Happy Anniversary! Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteYvonne - Thank you. We were very saddened by the news. I am glad we were able to make the trip.
DeleteI've enjoyed Colgan's books before and this one sounds like it will be good as well.
Thank you for stopping by!
Happy anniversary! Sounds like you had a lovely trip. Sorry to hear about your father-in-law. It is so tough as our parents get older. Voted in your TBR poll. Hope you have a chance to unwind with some great books before school time kicks off. Thanks for visiting my blog.
ReplyDeleteCheryl - Thank you. The ups and downs of life. I am glad we were able to getaway for our anniversary. We so rarely do. And the news about my father-in-law is sad. It really is tough as our parents (and ourselves) get older. Thank you for voting and visiting!
DeleteHappy anniversary! And glad you had a good trip. I've heard good things about Barbie. And I voted finishing School since that just looks fun :)
ReplyDeleteGreg - Thank you! The Barbie movie still surprised me even though I'd read so much about it before seeing it. I am glad we got to see it and that it turned out to be so good. Thank you for stopping by!
DeleteI'm glad you had a good trip. Both my mother and my father-in-law ended up with lung cancer. I'm very sorry to hear about your father-in-law's diagnosis.
ReplyDeleteI picked the lightest of your books. Good luck to Mouse on starting back to school and happy anniversary!
Deb - Thank you. I am sorry your mother and father-in-law had lung cancer too. He meets with the oncologist next week and hopefully we'll get more answers then about the prognosis.
DeleteI came close to putting a really heavy book on the list but decided I didn't know if I would be in the mood for it if it won, so I settled for mostly lighter fare.
Mouse is really nervous (and not so happy) about the start of school so I'm hoping it goes well for all our sakes.
Thank you for visiting!
Happy Anniversary! A trip to the mountains sounds lovely at this time of year. And so sorry to hear about your FIL's diagnosis. It's great that you could visit him. We are overdue for a good, long road trip.
ReplyDeleteLooks like some nice variety on your reading lately - and love that you stopped at bookstores along the way! We LOVED Bosch - when you finish it, there's a spin-off, Bosch: Legacy, focusing on Maddie (and Bosch is still in it), which is also great. We're planning to try Lincoln Lawyer - we are both huge fans of Michael Connelly's novels. His newer series featuring female detective Renee Ballard is also excellent.
Enjoy your books this week!
Sue
Book By Book
Sue - Thank you! We were hoping it would be cooler in the mountains, but it wasn't much cooler there than it was at home. Oh well. At least we had the shade of the trees. It was still very beautiful.
DeleteI am really gad we were able to make the trip to Utah. So much beautiful country to see on a road trip. I wish we could do that type of vacation more often.
My husband surprised my daughter and I by stopping at the Barnes and Noble in St. George on our trip. We were due for a break in the long drive and what better place to stretch our legs? :-)
We are loving Bosch too. I will have to look for Bosch: Legacy when we are finished with it. I hope you enjoy Lincoln Lawyer when you watch it. We've really enjoyed it. I'll definitely check out Connelly's newer series. Thank you for the recommendation!
Thank you for stopping by!
Happy belated silver wedding anniversary! I’m sorry to hear about your father in law. Cancer has hit my family very hard too. I really want to see the Barbie movie - perhaps I’ll talk my sister into going with me. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteJodie - Thank you! We figured we needed to do something special for our anniversary since it was a milestone one. :-)
DeleteI am sorry cancer has hit your family hard too. It seemed to all come on so suddenly, but I know in reality it's probably been a while in building up.
I hope you get a chance to see the Barbie movie and enjoy it when you do!
Thank you for visiting!
Glad you had a good visit. New books on vacation are a must ;) I hope Mouse enjoys her first day of school!! Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteCindy - A vacation doesn't seem complete without a visit to a bookstore. :-) Thank you for stopping by!
DeleteSounds like some good trips. Yes always so hard to finish a book we are loving. Oh dear, school starting up again!
ReplyDeleteKathryn - This summer has gone by so fast. Thank you for visiting!
DeleteI'm sorry about your father-in-law but glad to hear that you and your family got to spend some time with him.
ReplyDeleteI voted for "The Lost Girls of Willowbrook"; it sounds like an intriguing read.
Melody - Thank you. I am so glad we were able to make the trip too. Thank you for voting and stopping by!
DeleteI am so so glad that you got to visit family, especially since your father in law is ill. I recently binged all of Bosch and really enjoyed it though I haven't read the books.
ReplyDeleteHelen - Thank you. I am glad we were able to go too. We are enjoying Bosch. I really like the Connelly books I have read and my husband enjoys them as well. Thank you for visiting!
DeleteSounds like you had a nice time on your road trip! Hope you have a great week!
ReplyDeleteJamie - We did! Thank you for stopping by!
DeleteBosch and The Lincoln Lawyer were both good shows. So sorry to hear about your FIL.
ReplyDeleteMary - We're really enjoying the two shows. Thank you for visiting!
DeleteGlad you were able to have some nice trips, especially one you missed due to Covid. Some good looking new books there. Glad you got to see and enjoy Barbie. I thought it was fun as well! Hope you have a good week!
ReplyDeleteLisa - It was nice to get away for a little while. I hope you have a good week too! Thank you for visiting!
DeleteSounds like a nice visit though I am so sorry to hear about your father-in-law. Barbie does look fun. I haven't seen it yet but am looking forward to watching it soon. I can't wait to see what you end up reading this month. All your choices look great!
ReplyDeleteKatherine - Thank you. Not the best reason for a visit, but I am glad we were able to go. Thank you for stopping by!
DeleteI'm so sorry to hear about your father-in-law. I'm glad you were able to spend time with the family, but I can imagine how difficult it was to leave. Your cat is beautiful. I have a dilute tortie. I can very much relate to your cat being a sweetheart at home, but a terror at the vet. :-) Happy International Cat Day!
ReplyDeleteMeezan - Thank you. I am glad we could spend time with him.
DeleteNina certainly has a strong personality and doesn't hesitate to let us know what she wants. :-) Happy International Cat Day to you too! Thank you for visiting!
Hi. Bosch is excellent and we were addicted to it for a long while. Now we are finishing a show on Apple+ called Hijack, which is a tense one. That Bee journal is nice, luv it. Vegas is a bit toasty in the summer so you are brave! Though on Sunday I'll be flying into Palm Springs so what am I talking about. I'll be melted goo in no time. Is it really time for school already? Oh my. I hope Mouse will love her next teacher ....
ReplyDeleteSusan - We are really enjoying Bosch. And, I agree, it is addicting! I saw the first few episodes of Hijack and need to get back to it. Yes, Vegas was the hottest spot we hit while on our way to and from Utah. I hope you have a nice time in Palm Springs!
DeleteI think we are all not quite mentally ready for school to start again, but here we go! Thank you for stopping by!
Happy Belated 25th Anniversary, I'm glad you were able to get away. I'm sorry to hear about your father-in-law, it is so hard when a loved one is ill. I love that bee journal and hope you use it well. I read The Lost Girls of Willowbrook and really enjoyed it to a point. I thought it should have ended earlier, I lost interest after a point. I hope Mouse's return to school goes well and she loves her teacher and has friends in her class. I have watched the first two seasons of Bosch and need to get back to it. I also need to watch the last 5 episodes of season 2 of the Lincoln Lawyer. I watched the new season of Sweet Magnolias and it ended well, I think that is it for the series. I also watched Champions with Woody Harrelson on Prime, it was so good. I also love live theatre and have not ever seen Beetlejuice on the stage, it sounds fun. I am going to see Hamilton at the end of this month, Spamalot in September and Camelot in October. Enjoy the rest of your week, Wendy.
ReplyDeleteCarla - Thank you! We usually don't do much for our anniversary, but wanted to do something special for our 25th. I love journals, but am not the best at regular journaling. I always have the best intentions though. I want to start up again and use some of the pretty journals I have collected.
DeleteMouse is really nervous about this school year--new school and her first time rotating classrooms. Hopefully it will be a good year for her and she will have some of her friends in her classes.
My husband would love to see Spamalot. I bet that would be fun. I really want to see Hamilton on stage. The last time it was playing near us, it was during the height of the pandemic and we weren't going out as much then. Someday, hopefully! Thank you for visiting!
You have definitely been busy! Happy Anniversary. I am so glad that you were able to go somewhere to celebrate. I am very sorry to hear about your father-in-law's diagnosis. I hope that you have a great week!
ReplyDeleteCarole - Thank you! It was nice to be able to getaway just the two of us. We don't get to do that very often. Thank you for stopping by!
