I just started reading The Djinn Waits a Hundred Years by Shubnum Khan, and I am looking forward to seeing where it goes.
Akbar Manzil was once a grand estate off the coast of South Africa. Nearly a century later, it stands in ruins: an isolated boardinghouse for eclectic misfits, seeking solely to disappear into the mansion’s dark corridors. Except for Sana. Unlike the others, she is curious and questioning and finds herself irresistibly drawn to the history of the mansion: To the eerie and forgotten East Wing, home to a clutter of broken and abandoned objects—and to the door at its end, locked for decades.
Behind the door is a bedroom frozen in time and a worn diary that whispers of a dark past: the long-forgotten story of a young woman named Meena, who died there tragically a hundred years ago. Watching Sana from the room’s shadows is a besotted, grieving djinn, an invisible spirit who has haunted the mansion since her mysterious death. Obsessed with Meena’s story, and unaware of the creature that follows her, Sana digs into the past like fingers into a wound, dredging up old and terrible secrets that will change the lives of everyone living and dead at Akbar Manzil.
Sublime, heart-wrenching, and lyrically stunning, The Djinn Waits a Hundred Years is a haunting, a love story, and a mystery, all twined beautifully into one young girl’s search for belonging. [Goodreads Summary]
A weekly meme where readers share the first sentence of the book they are reading and say what they think. Hosted by the amazing Gillion Dumas of Rose City Reader.
First Line of the Prologue:
In an old wardrobe a djinn sits weeping.
First Line from Chapter One:
No one in Durban remembers a Christmas as hot as this.
A weekly meme in which readers share a random sentence or two from page 56 or 56% of the book they are reading. Our wonderful host Freda of Freda's Voice is on a break, but Anne of My Head is Full of Books has stepped in to host!
The two women sit together for hours in the parlor discussing the intruder upstairs in hushed voices. Grand Ammi assures Jahanara Begum that it is only a matter of time before Akbar's fascination with Meena Begum wears. Men have phases, she says, and he will soon grow weary of the novelty of dark flesh in his bed. She says history is full of such women who try to ensnare great men; women with no morals or faith to keep them in check.
Time is the enemy of these women, she says. Time reveals the fallacy of their plots. [excerpt from 56% of The Djinn Waits a Hundred Years]
The opening of the prologue hooked me right away. It made me want to know more. I am barely into the novel and so am not sure what is going on at the 56% mark of my e-book, but I will say I do not have a high opinion of the women talking. They sound like mean-spirited gossips. What unhappy women they must be, perhaps unsatisfied with their lots in life. I doubt Meena is any of the things Grand Ammi says she is. I cannot wait to meet her.
What do you think? Does The Djinn Waits a Hundred Years sound like something you would enjoy?
Tell Me Something Tuesday is a weekly discussion post where bloggers discuss a wide range of topics from books and blogging to life in general. It is hosted by Linda Book Girl of Mur-y-Castell and Jen from That’s What I’m Talking About. Join in by answering this week's question in the comments or on your own blog.
Is it easier or harder to write a review for a book you loved?
It depends. Sometimes it comes easy, and other times I have trouble finding the words and all I want to write is "WOW!" because I know I will not do the book justice.
Do you find it easier or harder? Or, like me, does it depend?
Every Friday Coffee Addicted Writer from Coffee Addicted Writer poses a question which participants respond on their own blogs within the week (Friday through Thursday). They then share their links at the main site and visit other participants blogs.
How long have you gone without reading? (submitted by Billy @ Coffee Addicted Writer)
The best answer I can offer is a couple or so days maybe. Even when I am in the middle of a reading slump, I at least pick up a book to try to overcome it, even if I don't get too far. There are days when I am swamped with work, family or my daughter's activities and am so exhausted to read more than a page or two some days, but I try to find a way.
What about you?
I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! Be sure and tell me what you are reading and are up to!

An old Djinn sits weeping. Well, now I want to know why!
ReplyDeleteAnne - Me too! Thank you for visiting!
DeleteThe beginning quotes from your book are definitely intriguing.
ReplyDeleteLike you, I read at least a little every day.
Mark - I think so too. I am really curious to see where this book takes me. No day is complete if I don't try to fit in some reading time. Thank you for stopping by!
DeleteInteresting sounding book.
ReplyDeleteIf I enjoy a book I think it is easier to review - I have to remember not to keep repeating myself in my excitement 😂
I was in a reading slump when I was pregnant and to try and overcome it I kept signing up to Blog Tours! Luckily once my son was born I got my reading mojo back!
Have a good weekend!

Emily - I am not too far into it so am still getting into it, but so far so good.
DeleteI am glad you got your reading mojo back after the birth of your son. Pregnancy can be such a trying time. I struggled with reading after my daughter was born, but late into my pregnancy I didn't get much reading done either.
I hope you have a good weekend too! Thank you for visiting!
The Djinn Waits a Hundred Years sounds very intriguing.
ReplyDeleteI think it depends regarding on writing a review for a book I loved. It's easier to describe how you felt about the book but it's also hard to do so without giving too much away.
I try to read every day, at least if it's only a page. Then again, I do go without reading for a day or two especially if I'm on vacation.
Hope you've a wonderful Friday! :)
Melody - I think so too! So far I like it, but I am not too far in yet.
DeleteYes! I agree with you. It can be hard not to give too much away when writing about a book I love.
I do not always get reading in when I am on vacation either. Sometimes I can slip reading time in, but it isn't always possible.
Thank you for stopping by!
Great excerpts! Thanks for sharing, and enjoy.
ReplyDeleteLaurel-Rain - Thank you!
DeleteI'm so glad you can push through your slump, even if you only read a page or two. I need to remember that when I'm in my next slump.
ReplyDeletehttps://jennielyse.com/book-blogger-hop-9/
Jenni Elyse - Getting through a slump can be hard. For me, a lot depends on the cause of the slump. And what worked to get me out the last time not work the next time. Sometimes it's just a matter of accepting I am not in the mood to read and focus for awhile on another interest. Thank you for visiting!
DeleteI have not heard of this one before. I hope you enjoy it. Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteCindy - I hope I will too! Thank you!
DeleteThis seems like an interesting story. Thanks for mentioning it!
ReplyDeleteBreana - I do enjoy a tale that takes me into the past full of secrets and a mystery to solve! Thank you for stopping by!
DeleteOh I like how you did one discussion/meme thread in a big post. I agree about reviewing books you love - sometimes it is hard, sometimes you just want to say LOVED IT BYE. Maybe you'd like to join our monthly book bingo?
ReplyDeleteJulie @ Chapter Break
Julie - Thank you! It's easier for me to post all at once than try to do separate posts. And more often than not, the posts don't turn out too long. About reviewing books we love--yes, that's exactly it. Haha. I will have to check out your monthly bingo. Thank you for visiting!
DeleteSounds good to me and I love the cover. Thanks for sharing your post on Book Beginnings!
ReplyDeleteGillion - Isn't the cover beautiful? I love it too. Thank you for stopping by!
DeleteThats awesome that you can make yourself read a few pages when you're in a slump... When I'm in a slump, I'm just slumped...No getting out until it's over. Idea-ist@GetLostInLit
ReplyDeleteIdea-ist - I do my best to push through it somehow. Sometimes that does mean not reading for a few days. And other times I make an effort to read at least a poem or page or something, hoping something will click. A lot depends on why I'm in the slump. But yeah, sometimes you just have to wait it out. Thank you for visiting!
DeleteThe excerpts sound really good. I'll have to check this one out.
ReplyDeleteYvonne - I hope to spend some quality time with the book this weekend and am looking forward to seeing where it takes me. Thank you for stopping by!
DeleteThe cover of the fantasy novel is eye catching. Hope you enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteHarvee - It is a lovely cover! I love a good haunted house story steeped in history. I cannot wait to read more of this one. Thank you for visiting!
DeleteI find it hard to review a book I didn't love because I don't really want to spend the time thinking about and writing about a book I can't really recommend. So I mostly don't write about those books. ;D
ReplyDeleteLark - I find it hard to read books I don't have strong feelings about--even those I liked, but maybe didn't love. I tend not to have much to say about those books. Those would probably be the hardest for me. Books I loved or didn't like are a bit easier for me--although not always. Thank you for stopping by!
DeleteThat does sound like a good book. I find it easier to write about books I like. I've gone a month without reading back when I broke my shoulder and was in too much pain to do anything.
ReplyDeleteMary - I don't think I could read if I were in a lot of pain either. It would be hard to concentrate. Thank you for visiting!
DeleteI think it's interesting when I don't know what to say about a book or feel I don't have much to say. It doesn't mean the book is good or bad, I just sometimes struggle to put into words how I felt about a book.
ReplyDeleteHelen - I know that feeling all too well. Sometimes I struggle with what to say about a book too, regardless of what I thought of it. Thank you for stopping by!
DeleteYes! Sometimes WOW is all I want
ReplyDeleteBlodeuedd - Same! Thank you for visiting!
DeleteI tend to wait until I have big blocks of time to read. I need to start fitting in a little reading each day even on days when I don't have a lot of time. I'd get more reading done that way. Have a great week. :)
ReplyDeleteMeezan - I don't often have big blocks of time to devote to reading so I read when I can otherwise I might not get to read at all. Thank you for stopping by!
DeleteWhat a great beginning and a gorgeous cover! Thanks for sharing! Hope you have a great week! :)
ReplyDeleteAshley - Thank you!
DeleteSometimes I wish I could just plug my computer into my brain and allow it to process a book I loved. WOW! should be enough. LOL!
ReplyDeleteJen - Yes! It would be so much easier if we could do that. Thank you for visiting!
