Weekly Mews: Smoky Air and Hamilton at the Pantages

I am linking up to the Sunday Post hosted by Kim of Caffeinated Book Reviewer and The Sunday Salon (TSS) hosted by Deb Nance of Readerbuzz  where participants recap our week, talk about what we are reading, share any new books that have come our way, and whatever else we want to talk about. I am also linking It's Monday! What Are you Reading? hosted by Kathryn of Book Date where readers talk about what they have been, are and will be reading.

I am linking up Stacking the Shelves hosted by Marlene of Reading Reality a meme in which participants share what new books came their way recently.

We have had our attention on three big fires in the surrounding counties, one of which has made its way into our own. Some of my coworkers were evacuated from their homes or had to help relatives leave theirs. The smoke was very bad early last week, to the point that some schools closer to the fires and most other schools, like my daughter's, limited any deep breathing and outdoor activities. The heat didn't help. Fortunately, the temperatures cooled down the middle of the week, and while we aren't taking our chances opening the windows quite yet, it's very much a relief. Firefighters are still fighting to contain the fires, making slow progress.

Last weekend Anjin, Mouse, and mom took me out for dinner to the Spaghetti Factory to celebrate my birthday. We had a nice dinner and then came home for some ice cream cake, my favorite. The running joke in our family is that every birthday I turn 33. I won't share which anniversary of my 33rd birthday I'm on, but it's a lot. I got a good laugh when I saw the cake.

This weekend we went to see the musical Hamilton performed live at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre. It was just as good as I hoped it would be. Anjin, Mouse, and I watch the recorded version frequently, it being one of our favorite musicals, so being able to see it in person was a special treat. My mom was able to join us, a late birthday present for the both of us.

What have you been up to?

I am about half way through A Girl Called Samson by Amy Harmon. It got off to a slow start, but has since picked up. I thought it quite a coincidence that I am reading a book set around the American Revolution at the same time we went to see Hamilton. As it happens, Mouse is studying that time period on school right now too.

The Golden Enclaves (Scholomance #3) by Naomi Novik took up most of my reading time this past week--it was too good to put down. Novik has a gift for world building and I am such a fan of El (but don't tell her that because she would hate the idea of having fans). It was a good conclusion to a great trilogy.

Thank you to everyone who voted in my September TBR List Poll! Although fall officially may not be here yet, it's close enough and I am craving something lighthearted and ghostly.

Darci Hannah's A Fatal Feast at Bramsford Manor (Food & Spirits Mysteries #1) and The Third Wife of Faraday House by B.R. Myers tied for second place with five (5) votes each. Haunted Ever After (Boneyard Key #1) by Jen DeLuca won with nine (9) votes. So, Haunted Ever After it is! I have enjoyed other books by Jen DeLuca I have read and am excited to give her latest book a try. Thank you again for voting!

What are you reading right now?

My TBR List is hosted by Michelle at Because Reading. The 1st Saturday of every month, I will list 3 books from my TBR pile I am considering reading and let you vote for my next read during that month. My review will follow (unfortunately, not likely in the same month, but eventually--that's all I can promise).

Bookish Birthday Loot:

The Jane Austen Escape Room Book illustrated by Marjolein Bastin
(doesn't this sound fun? and look at all the bookstore gift cards!)

Weyward by Emilia Hart
The Hacienda by Isabel Cañas

Amari and the Despicable Wonders (#3) by B.B. Alston
This Book Won't Burn by Samira  Ahmed

Birthday flowers (and chocolates)

Have you read any of these? If so, what did you think?
think?

I finally got around to watching the third season of Bridgerton recently, which I really liked. It's such a fun show with beautiful costumes and lovely sets. My husband and I watched the first episode of the new season of Murders in the Building and are looking forward to seeing how this season will unfold.

What are you watching these days?

I hope you have a great week! Let me know what you have been reading!

  1. I'm a big Netflix fan but have not yet seen Bridgerton. Busy watching K dramas, lol. And series like The Accident, and The Perfect Couple, two new dramas that are quite good. Have a good week.

    1. Harvee - K Dramas seem to be popular among the blogosphere, I've noticed. I have yet to get into them, but I bet I would like them if I did. I hope you have a good week too!

  2. I need to ask for an ice cream cake for my birthday, I think. It's fun that you celebrate the anniversary of your 33rd birthday. That's a great place to stop.

I have Weyward here, but I haven't read it yet.

    1. Deb - Ice cream cakes are the best. :-) I am not sure why I got stuck on 33, but we have fun with the joke every year. Haha.

I have an e-copy of Weyward too, but it's nice to have a paper copy. I haven't yet read it but hopefully this next month. Thank you for visiting!

  3. I loved Naomi Novik's Scholomance series! El really would hate having fans lol. I got the first two books in the series from the library, but the third one wasn't out yet, so I preordered it. So, I now own the third book without owning the first two. It's definitely a series I would reread, so I should probably just get the first two books!

  4. I was curious about A Girl Named Sampson so glad to hear it's picked up. Looking forward to your review. That's awful about the smoke! I hope it all gets contained soon.

    1. Tina - I will likely finish the book tonight or tomorrow. I'm already eager to do a little research and find out more about the real life people the book is based on.

There seems to be more progress on the fires today, which is good news. I hope there will be good news soon. Thank you for visiting!

  5. I'm not sure which fire is affecting you, but I'm sorry you're somewhat impacted. These fires are awful this year. We had to evacuate due to the Bridge fire, and we're now on day 6 staying in a motel. It's awful not knowing when you can go home. Stay safe and try not to breathe the smoke!

    1. Tammy - I am so sorry you had to evacuate your home. I hope they are able to get that fire under control soon. I know it's the biggest of the three we've been monitoring and only 9% contained, last I heard. It seemed to linger at 0% for so long and kept getting bigger. Luckily, the winds seem to be blowing away from us right now and so the smoke isn’t so bad. The worst of it we saw was from the Airport Fire, this past week. Everything had an orange/yellow tinge to it. My daughter's band teacher decided against letting the kids play their instruments, even though they would be indoors as as a precaution. The Line, Bridge, and Airport fires have resulted in evacuations that impacted coworkers and clients my agency serves, so we’ve been following all three.

I hope your home will be okay and you stay safe!

  6. Seeing a favorite musical in a live performance sounds wonderful. We watched a TV broadcast of Hamilton on stage live — even that was very enjoyable.

  7. Sorry to hear about the fires & smoke there ... I have been keeping an eye on the LA Times to see the news. It's worrisome. All man-made, ugh! Hope it gets better. & Happy belated birthday -- what a fun cake. We'll be 33 forever, lol. Glad you enjoyed the Hamilton performance. That's awesome! So glad you all enjoyed it.

    1. Susan - Thank you. I hope your dad is safe. I know you must be worried about him, so close to the fires. I'm glad to see the containment percentage rising on all three of the big ones around here, but there's still a lot of progress that needs to be made.

Thank you too for the birthday wishes. Yes, 33 forever! LOL

  9. I'm so sorry about all those wildfires! Two weeks ago our air was thick with the smoke from all of Idaho's wildfires, then last week we got smoke from So. Cal. Not fun. I hate breathing that smoky air; it makes my throat scratchy and my allergies kick up. Hope they get a handle on them soon. And I hope you enjoy reading Haunted Ever After .I thought it was a fun book. :D

I've only seen the first season of Outlander. Now you've got me wanting to catch up so I can see the newer episodes. I hope you have a good week too!

    1. Cindy - Thank you. I think we are fairly safe physically from the fires, fortunately, but I do hope the fire fighters are able to get the fires under control and out sooner than later. They have their work cut out for them, it seems like. I hope you have a great week too!

  13. Hopefully, you'll get some of the cooling temps and rain that we're getting here in Northern California to help with those wildfires! It's discouraging when you have smoke for days! Sounds like you had a wonderful birthday week with dinner out, a play and fun times with family! Hope you enjoy Haunted Ever After! I thought is was cute.

    1. Rachel - I sure hope so! There's a very small chance of rain in my area on Tuesday, I think. I hope it does come our way. Or, at the very least, to the areas where the fires are (and no lightning, please). I am really looking forward to starting Haunted Ever After. My husband said he voted for that one and was glad to see it won. :-) Thank you for visiting!

  17. I hope they get the fires under control soon. The Lake fire by me raged for about a week then they got it under control.

I saw Hamilton at the Pantages and it was just so much fun!

One of my mom's best friends is named Deborah Samson. Yep, she's related.
